    Hard Top Bright work removal

Does anyone know the best way of removing the trim on the front edge of the hard top?

The top will be going in to be sprayed due to a tiny amount of rust showing behind this trim.

    Stuart,

Carefully is the answer! This should be held in place with plastic clips. These often snap. They are cheap enough, so sacrifice them rather than damage the trim.

When I did my hard top a few years ago, I filled all the trim with petroleum jelly (Vaseline) before fitting. This should keep water out, but to be sure I then used marine-grade sealant (in a silicone-sealant type applicator gun) and squeezed this into all gaps from top and bottom. The advantage being that there is no way water is going to get between the trim and the paint now. Disadvantage? There is probably no way these trims will come off again in the future, but then there shouldn't be any need to remove them.

I have had the quote to bare metal respray the boot lid and respray (repair surface rust where clips fit at front) hard top.

£599 inc vat do you think this is a good price? I'm only asking as I have never had paint work done before!

My Precious had a complete body respray two years ago (before my ownership) after a RTA- the hardtop was not on at the time so missed out. Beacause the standard of therepair (by a Jensen bodyshop near Banbury) looked very good, when some time ago I found myself passing on the M40 with an hour or two to pass (as one does!), I called in to get a quote for the respray of the hardtop. £2000 was the verabl estimate!

I made my excuses and left.

Any paint shop will be dubious of anything 30 odd years old and not know the condition of what is underneath until the paint is off, any weld in repairs would probably be (quite a bit) extra.

A lot of labour in the prep just to remove the old paint and repair any dings. Paint is far more expensive than you would think, probably £70 with consumables, then the use of heated ventilated professionalspray booth.

          You soon get to £600!

You don't always get what you pay for but go to "someone that does a bit of spraying" and it is far more likely to look like it has been spat on with a straw, not last the year out and you be unhappy with the job.

          Mark.

This guy has done work on my dads car and my nieghbours had his car totally resprayed by him his paint is a mile deep to look at and perfect in everyway.

The quote is for paint £110 pound and Labour £400 which with vat (now used calculator!) is £599.

We have agreed this may alter once the bright work at the front of the hard top is off and we can see what the two minor looking spots of rust look like!:?

I must admit that he is starting with metal work and paint that is in superb condition apart from these tiny defects so work is going to be minimal
