    Rear Wheel bearings

    Has anybody on the forum get experience with adjusting rear wheel bearings?

    The ROM says to adjust the endfloat to 0.002" to 0.005". When I rebuilt the drive shafts I set mine to 0.004"

    There was quite significant play in the rear wheel bearings and an annoying and worrying knock from the back end when going over bumps. The whole rear end has been re-bushed and I've checked the obvious such as tightness of all bolts and exhaust, so my assumption is the knock is the rear bearings.

    I've removed the driveshafts and set end float to 0.001" which is tighter than recommended by the ROM, but the wheels feel much better now with minimal play.I don't think the bearings are too tight as they turn nice and freely.

    Haven't had chance yet to road test the car, so don't know whether I've cured the knock, its raining at the moment and don't want to get it wet!!!!!

      I've rebuilt loads of hubs, I can't remember off hand the end float settings but it's all there in the ROM, if I remember rightly it needs to be between 0.06mm to 0.12mm.

      The danger with over tightening the adjusting nut is that the bearing is too tight and the whole inner bearing ends up turning on the stub axle. I've seen loads were this has worn a groove in the stub axle which renders them scrap, it's also quite common to see a groove worn into the spacer which again is caused by the inner part of the bearing turning. The standard check for this is that if the dustcover up against the adjusting nut spins then there's a very good chance the stub axle is shot.

      It's important to set them up right in order to set the right pre-load on the bearings, you can't back off once you've overcompressed the collapsable spacer. Another thing to watch out for is that the standard tab washers are loose on the shafts so when tightening the lock nut the adjusting nut can turn losing the end float. Chris Witor supplies an improved design that is a much tighter fit helping to prevent this from happening.

        0.12mm is 0.0048" and I initially set mine to 0.004" so its within the range specified by the ROM.

        My point is that with this amount of endfloat the rear wheels on my carhad excessive play and would fail the MOT.

        Although the ROM says 0.002" to 0.005",I have reset the endfloat to 0.001" and teh rear wheelplay is much reduced. I hope I haven't over tightened them, they dostill rotate freely.

          Often the excessive endfloat is caused by the groove wearing in the spacer that goes between the dust cap and the inner race, i.e. the spacer that applies the force onto the crush spacer as the adjusting nut is turned. Tightening the adjusting nut then temporarily removes the endfloat until the groove wears again. However if the dust cap wasn't able to spin before removing the play then you should be OK.

          My advice would be just keep an eye on it, perhaps check for play after you've covered a thousand miles or so.
