Teccy type computer question

Some of you guys know far more than me about computers, well most of you probably!

So here goes, I've got a walkie talkie radio which we use for bike instructing and on the PC at work I have the software for programming the radio. The software requires that the radio is connected via a COM port, but the PC hasn't got one that matches the lead (9 pin). I've got a USB to serial adapter cable so how can I make the PC think it has a COM port when I plug the USB cable in?

I hope that makes some sense.

Sometimes usb to serial adapters don't work very well, I found PCMCI expansion card that provided a serial port much better. I bought one for about a tenner from e-bay.

The problem is that the programme requires that you select a COM port, so I need to make the adapter cable 'become' a COM port that I can then select to make the connection.

Hi Kev,

I'm no expert, but my guess would be that you need a Virtual Com Port Driver (S/W). This will sit between the O/S and the H/W, so that the application will see aserial com port, which is in fact a USB port.

Failing that just buy a cheap Serial Port card from EBay like this below

Thanks guys, I can't find a driver online yet, there's no markings or anything on the adapter saying what it is. I'll check with the boss, I bet he's got the disc kicking about at home somewhere!!
