    BELT FAILURE

A friendly neighbour living on our Complex has been pestering me for some time to take him for a ride in my Stag, so today I thought I would oblige. Just a short run around the back streets of Los Cristianos. Everything seemed fine until the steering started to get heavy and I thought must have a look under the bonnet when I get back to see what the problem is.

As I was nearing home there was suddenly a tremendous loud clatter from underneath the bonnet forcing me to immediately pull over thinking the worst. Lifting the bonnet there was nothing left of the power steering belt which must have broke and then shredded itself around the fan and under parts of the body. The cooling fins on the oil cooler pipe were all flattened as though bashed with a mallet, and I could see power steering fluid where it should not have been.

Got the car home and parked her up. Engine too hot to mess about checking the full extent of damage there & then.
Will do so tomorrow when the Car Park is still in shade. I have a spare belt somewhere but dread undoing & redoing the power steering bracket bolts as the holes are already heli-coiled and I have a “heath robinson” bracket attached to keep everything in place. Hopefully will be able to fit a new belt and separate and bend the cooling fins back in place. Why some power steering fluid escaped I don’t yet know but hope it is nothing serious and the pipes are O.K.

    Wish me Luck.

no reason for heli-coiled holes to be a problem, fingers crossed for you on the fluid might be nothing

        Hi Terry
I wouldn't worry about the fluid,i noticed when working on my front suspension and turning the steering wheel without the engine running, fluid comes back out of the reservoir, the level drops again when the pump is running.
Don't know why,but i've a feeling we might find out soon

        Cheers

Managed to fit a new belt today in under half an hour. Got the belt on without having to undo the steering bracket bolts and all seems well again. Did a few routine service jobs at the same time as it was cloudy today so I could work on the car without getting burnt.
Topped up the battery with distilled water, checked water level - O.K., put some STP in with the oil, and topped up the carb oil, etc. etc. Went for a run and no problems and steering back to normal feel. Checked belt again afterwards and it is still O.K.
Then it was off to the local Spar in the Stag to top up with provisions.
Thanks to all of you who sent there good wishes. I cannot remember the last time I changed this belt - it must be 10 years plus. Power steering does make a difference though, when the belt bust I needed both hands on the wheel to be able to turn the wheels.
