Electric Soft Top

Hi All

Bored due to rain and wondered has anyone looked at the possibility of making the soft top electrically operated?

Has anyone looked at or own a modern car which has one to see how they work?

Sorry if you think this is a stupid idea but it is chucking it down and I am bored!!

Hi Stuart,

You may remember my posting a couple of weeks ago about 21st Century Stag. I had the Audi A5 cabriolet for a couple of days and although the tonneau cover and soft top are similar to the Stag, the mechanics/electrics involved would have been way out of BL's league. I cannot see that this would be an easy thing to retro-fit to the Stag.

Hard enough to get the hood to fold/unfold manually, let alone under power.

i have thought about this also and think that the 3 series BMW has a very similar roof set up as the stag

it would be great to have it on the stag if it could be done

If someone can make a metal folding roof work for the stag i'd buy one.

Having seen some very fancy hydraulics used on the US version of Pimp My Ride, I'm sure it isn't beyond the wit of man........

A hydraulic pump, a few rams and microswitches and maybe a small microprocessor to time the operations....... and there you have have it....... maybe it would be a bit ambitious for the header rail locks to be automatic

Automating the locks would be easy compairedto automating the bloke to lay on the roof

What about fitting a fully retractable sun roof in the hard top? Or doing it a la Citroen 2CV.

Hopefully someone out there can put me right, but I believe there were four power hood Stags that went to the USA, I can't find any reference to them so it may just be a story, but that's what I've been told - anybody else heard of them ? Martin.

If anyone is keen (mad) enough to try doing this, dont even think of using the standard frame without substantial reinforcement. It can't even stand up to the rigours of normal abuse, let alone abuse by a motor or hydraulic ram!!

I have had ideas about improving the hood operation though. I like the idea of improving the front locks, which dont seem to havea long anough travel,and improving therear catch which often jams.

Maybe when I have finished my Weber project........
