    Spark Plugs

Just read some posts on spark plugs, and it seems that there is a problem with NGK BP5E(S) plugs and misfire ! This has got me worried now as I’ve just got these from SOC, so not sure if I should send back and buy NGK BP5E. or stick to bosch.

Anyone using NGK BP5ES without any problems. Stag been running on Bosch Super Plus WR8 DC+ without any problems.........

Rob, why did you want to change from the Bosch plugs if they have been ok?

“Well” made my mind up to do the service myself, oil, filters, plugs. For some time now, thingshave beenvery tight. Would normally go to Faversham classic’s for service so just trying to keep costs down.

I phoned SOC for their parts list and just bite the bullet and ordered the service parts on phone, then I checked the engine and it had Bosch plugs this is what F/Cs had put in last year.

The guys at F/Cs have looked after old blue for about 7 years and have always been first class. But I have to do some of the work myself now. And I can’t lay up old blue love driving too much and I don’t want to think of the other option...... I’m looking By November that all will be okay.

But I must say that the information and help on this forum is first class and it gives me the confidents to have a go at any job on old blue.

            Hi Rob

I ran my Stag on BP5ES for about 12,000 miles without any problems at all. I now have V grooved BP5E in and cannot tell any difference at all! I'm more than happy with either type of NGK.

              Rob,

Why are you changing the plugs after only a year? Have you done a high mileage? 20-30k? or have you got problems with a misfire. Regular oil and filter changes are a must, but in my opinion ignition components - leads, plugs and points are OK with an inspection and in the case of points and plugs a quickclean and check to ensure the gap is OK. Only change when they are worn or give problems like a misfire.

My car was running rough when I bought it,put a set ofUnipart GSP 4382 in it and it run perfect, last year decided to give the car a treat located some Unipart plugs with a superceeded number GSP 2008,put them in and it run rough.

Done a bit of research and I think the GSP 4382 were made by Champion and the GSP 2008 were made by Bosch,my car wont run right with NGK plugs eitherbut my last stag run perfect with them fitted, soI willgo forChampion N12Y next time which I think the Unipart GSP 4382 are equivilent to.

mine had BP5ES in it when I got it - seemed to run fine - but changedfor a set of BP5E as part of servicing and would not say it runs any better but it definitely starts better. The old plugs may have been worn out as I do not know how long they were in there but will be sticking to BP5E from now on.

I’m getting carried away with the service; I’ve only driven 3400 miles. Plugs looking black & dry, so will clean up, Have to get the guys at F/Cs to set mixture up, they will also put it through the MOT for me.....no points have electronic ignition.

                        Thanks guys,

For all the input into plugs, it looks like if its running & starting okay with that brand of plug, Why change........I will change next year now that I have them.

                          Rob,

Just been out and check what plugs I have. They are NGKBP5ES,I fitted them 3 years ago andI've not noticed any problems with them.

As a general ruleI have always got around 30k miles from a set of spark plugs - and i am basing this mainly on older cars, as Kryten has just posted his have done 16k with no problems.

if it ain't broke, don't fix it
