    Painting underneath the car

Does anyone know the best way to colour code the underneath of the car and still get protection from the elements?

Do I have to waxoyl then spray over the top of this or will the paint not stick?:?

    Is it worth the effort?:X

Is it easier to keep clean due to being orange instead of black?:?

I have to take the whole rear suspension of the fix the leaky diff and change the bushes on the diff and trialing arms so thought this would be a good oppurtunity try and make mine look like the on currently on e bay (sapphire blue one real nice)

    Hi
It depends on what level you want to achieve, on the stag I am restoring I used a product called U-Pol Gravitex stonechip which is black in colour, tough as nails and overpaintable. I first hand painted the underside with finnegans No.1 primer after removing all the underseal and rust/old loose paint with a hot air gun and wire brush attachment in a drill (takes ages but worth it). Then the gravitex paint and handpainted with non drip gloss (Signal Red in my case) from wilkinsons of all places!

You have make sure no oil or waxoyl from previous rust proofing remains as the paint will not adhere properly. If you are not that bothered about cosmetics I would recommend Waxoyl black underbody coating which is a mixture of waxoyl and underseal.

PS You will need a compressor and shutz gun to apply the gravitex coating.Or alternatively use some the stoneship coatings available in aerosol form which are ok but are not as thick when you spray them on.

I think if the underside of your car is body colour it will be easier in future to spot any damage/oil leaks or rust appearing.
Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for your help Glen I will consider this option. Be great if you could flip a fully assembled car on its side like that would make repairs really easy

        You can, see

        http://www.cjautos.org.uk/

for a complete range of car tilters. They should be at the NEC show in Nov, where they demonstrate the tilters in action.
