    chrome wire wheels

can anyone help regards wire wheels ? I think those on the front cover of the latest magazine look amazing.

I am looking to fit them to my Stag, but have heard tales of them 'rubbing' against some part of the axle/wheel arch on sharp turns - has anyone got first hand experience of this happening ? is it because of their width ?

if you have a car with wires and they fit fine, I'd really appreciate knowing if they are Rimmers standard set or from somewhere else. Such an expensive conversion it makes sense to ask first and get it right.

    many thanks folks.

    Hi facel,

All I can say is that I have wires and they fit OK. They were fitted by the previous owner and I have no receipt from the seller so unfortunately cannot confirm if they are Rimmers or not. He bought lots of other stuff from Rimmers, so it wouldn't surprise me if he got the wheels from them - but no proof, sorry.

I'd be very surprised if Rimmers got the offset so wrong that their wheels rubbed, but owners sometimes fit tyres thatare too wide and it is the tyresthat sometimes rub whether on wires, alloys or steel rims. My tyres are 185 70s.

Ditto stagstr's response but on my previous stag I had factory fitted wires and had a constant problem with the rear wires coming loose no matter how much I hammered them tight:shock:.

This caused them to rub on the arches if not dealt with immediately!:?

I have read somewhere (on this forum I think ) that to get the wheels to fit properly you need to cut the end of the wheel studs first if you don’t the wires keep loose coming

That's because those owners don't go to the trouble of fitting the correct wire wheel studs. They are shorter than the standard wheel studs. If you're going to go to the trouble of fitting wire wheels why would you not fit the correct studs (and nuts)? See the Parts Catalogue pages 4-34, 4-38 and 4-45.

Mine had the correct studs and nuts (chamfered around the hex part) but they still came loose, I had to resort to checking them before driving just to be safe:X

Perhaps you should be telling facel where you bought your wheels, adaptors, studs, nuts (and torque wrench?) so he can avoid that supplier.

Stud & Nuts from Rimmer which never came loose, no torque wrench for wire wheel as thay had the knock on style centre nut and these wheels were fitted as an optional extra by Triumph themselves so manufacturer unknown.

Stuart, I thought you meant the nuts came loose off the studs. If it was the spinners which came loose, did you have them on the correct side? They are handed, so right side adaptors and spinners cannot go on the left side. This is so that they actually tighten as you drive the car. If they were loosening maybe you had them wrong way round.

I can't remember know as it was 4 years ago when I had that car but it used to belong to Ken Hudson so should have been correct!
