    Oil Pump

    Hi

first post so apologies if does not go quite to plan!

having the stag engine rebuilt and just had a nasty experience with a new Rimmer Bros oil pump, it failed almost straight away. Luckily only whilst on tickover. Rimmer Bros not exactly being very helpful, :Xhave offered to replace but not interested in the Mechanics extra work checking no damage has been caused, stripped down bottom end etc. I am now very reluctant to use a Rimmer Bros part. Can anybody advise where I can get a better quality oil pump for a 1974 model. :?

    Thanks

some people I have been discussing this with have said its a known problem with the Rimmer bros part, faulty batch or something.

When you say failed, what exactly happened to it?

I'm sure everyone would be interested to know if there were dodgy oil pumps appearing on the scene!!!

I quote from the mechanic, steel sleeve around the relief valve blew out. Old pump had this staked in, new pump looks like a shrink fit. Actually heard the sleeve blow out and managed to stop the engine really quick.

If you are correct and the steel sleeve is an interference fit or shrink fit this is not good as aluminium and steel have different thermal properties and expand and contract at different rates hence the dowels in the original part!

You have probably hit the nail on the head, once the engine has warmed up Pop! New pump is definately not staked, itsfriction fitted or shrunk, sleeve definately shot out.

I am just a bit unhappy with the Rimmer Bros attitude and response, concerns me about all the other parts I have splashed out on from them on this rebuild. Being a new Stag owner you tend to look to them for advise good quality and support.

I agree I have been using Rimmer for 10 years or more and have had no complaints with the service or the goods.

Perhaps you should ask where these were made? If not in the UK probably India or China hence the poor quality!

We should insist that all goods are from the UK where possible as they will have to be manufactured to strict ISO9000 etc guide lines.

Having just put my own company through ISO, and we are a manufacturing company I will ask the question, however the customer should not be Rimmers quality contol department! All parts should be vetted before release by them, in my opinion. its really put me off. This £40 part could have written off the complete rebuild.

Thanks for your response, I am impressed with the forum.

If it's marked County then it's made in India IIRC. The originalswere markedHobourn-Eaton. Personally if the old pump was still within tolerance then I'd have stuck with that.

With regard to the Rimmer care, I was impressed with the way my telephone order and delivery was handled. Top marks on that front. I think you can really only judge a company when you have a problem!

For interest I obtained new (County) innards for my oil pump from SOC spares, the old parts weren't bad and no scores in casing. Cheaper than replacement.
