    Stormforce Car cover

Has anyone used one of these types of car covers as they claim they are 100% waterproof and protect against various weather conditions including high winds!

I need to buy one as I have no garage but don't want to shell out £124 if it won't last:?

I am also considering building a carport but this will cost twice as much but last longer.

    Hi Stuart,

I only have limited experience of this but had a cover on my stag when I first bought her as I could not get her in the garage. Whilst the cover protected the car from external elements, condensation built up underneath the cover as it was not breathable, and if left for a few days it built up and started to smell. My local bodywork man suggested that the most important thing is airflow, as this will clear any condensation from the body, so a breathable cover as an option may prove better but will let some rain through. I think it's a "suck it and see" issue as there are pros & cons for both. The car port is probably your best option in the long run if you can do it.

      Hi Stuart,

I have not used that one - i do have good experience with the Storm Cover provided by the TSSC. My car lives outside and is used daily so being able to get it on/off quickly is important to me.

The cover extends below the level of the door glass as well to reduce the chance of rainwater collecting. An extra loop of the elastic round the rear bumpers keeps it in place in even the strongest winds

Tim's point about airflow is good - in my case not being completely covered removes this issue - I'm sure there are plenty of others available, but this works for me.

      cheers

          hi stuart

Have you thought about an outdoor carcoon, I have kept my stag in one of these for around 4 years with no deterioration of the car whatsoever, although you will need a power supply for the fans and battery charger.

I decided to buy one after working on my stag in the winter, even though I had a good quality car cover and car was under car port you would be surprised by the amount of moisture on the chassis, I decided that an investment of around 500 pounds was cheaper than the inevitable bodywork that would be required keeping it under car cover for a couple of years, a decision I have never regretted.

Try the classic car show coming up in birmingham, thats where I got mine , they usually have a good discount for show offers

          Regards

          Mick

( note I have no connection with carcoon just in case I sounded like a salesman!!)

                  Hi Stuart,

I have used a Stormforce cover since April and I am totally happy with it. When we've had heavy rain the car has stayed dry and whenthingsheat up again moisture and condensation are not present. It takes moments to put on and the 2 straps which pass under the car enable it to remain in the strongest of winds. Living on the south coast we do get some pretty high winds too. It is also parked under a huge Oak tree and the cover has kept all the debris off my nice paint work. My year old soft top has remained in perfect condition throughout. The cover is 100% ultra violet resistant so you don't get paint/wood fade.

As its shaped for the Stag the elasticated front and rear cling neatly underneath the bumpers and all that shows is the bottom inch of the front number plate. It is shown on my avatar. I bought it from Cover-Zone at their Littlehampton branch and they are based at Ilford. www.cover-zone.com

There are a couple of rules when using this cover. You should check under it every couple of weeks to ensure there is no moisture building up, but as the cover breathes it shouldn't happen. And you shouldn't put it on a car that has been painted in the previous 3 to 6 months. Additionally, you should ensure the car has been well cleaned and dry before fitting the cover to minimise scratches from dirt trapped under the fabric. You can put the cover on if the car is wet, just make sure its clean.

I have no connection with Cover-Zone, HONEST. I'm just a very satisfied customer.

                  I hope this helps.

                  Cheers

                  David.

Thanks Dave I think this will be a good buy so will purchase once I've been paid. I will then save up and build a carport which will offer double protection then.

                    Regards

I have been using an outdoor cover on my Stag since i have had it. I think it was from cover zone and was about £50 with the postage, off Ebay. It keeps the car nice and dry and as yet i have no evidence of damp inside, but i think that may depend on the type of surface you park on. On a windy day it will blow up like a baloon allowing a change of air under the cover. As with these type of covers it is probably best practice to remove it at least every two or three weeks to check the car especially during the winter months.

Any type of protection has to better than leaving the car out in the elements to deteriorate.

I've known people who've used car covers where constant movement of the cover in the breeze has actually worn the paint away. Probably more of a risk if your cellulose paint job is a bit 'soft', butgetting a snug and securefit is important.

Hantsdave will hopefully help on this matte rof damaging the paint work as has the cover already.

From the information given the cover has four layers the last one being a soft inner layer to protect the paint work so hopefully should keep the car in tip top condition whilst I slave away earning money to spend on my beloveded sshhhh don't tell the wife she thinks she's the 'beloved'

Well, after nearly 6 months, with several stormy and very wet gales the paintwork is in tip top condition. The cover does have 4 layers and the inner layer is quite soft. I'm no expert in auto paints but I would even go so far as to say that the gentle movement of the cover does leave the white paintwork nice and shiny.

No doubt some wag will now say that persistent rubbing of the cover will wear through to the primer. Were that the case, all such covers would have a really bad name. Being such a snug fit it is only in really heavy winds it moves at all. Perhaps with Stormforce cover they have learnt lessons from lesser cheaper covers and have actually improved the technology.

Until recently I had an XJ6 Gold which had a stunning deep red metallic paint which looked bloody awful after 10 months under a single layered non shaped nylon sheeted cover.

Some advice for you Stuart, I have overcome the tut tutting beloved scenario by constantly reminding mine that all this effort and expense is purely so that she can enjoy drives next summer in our beautiful car.

All I can add to that...is that the house is in joint names, thank God my Stag isn't.

                              David.
