    oil pressure relief valve

    Hi

    I seem to be losing oil through the oil pressure relief valve. Looking at the maintenance manual it suggests that I need to remove the exhaust pipe and then the relief valve to get at the o ring that is probably the culprit. Does anyone know if it is easy to do the job without the b***s ache of doing all that? I have a selection of o rings, has anyone a spare that they can measure for me so I can know if I need to get thespecific one?

    Hi Paul

    The relief valve bung that carries the o ring should come out without all that faffing about - just remove the split pin and give the bung a prod and a tap and the spring should push it out.

    Haven't got a dimension for the o ring, but as I remember it is a standard size that you should be able to get from your local factor's variety box - just take the old one down and match it.

    Lube the o ring up well with vaseline when refitting, and make sure the split pin hole hasn't got a burr on the inner face that'll damage the new o ring on the way in.

      Thanks for taking the time to help.I take on boardthe suggestion to go to the local factors.I thinkmy boxofO rings is metricand I presume the Stag usedChristian unitsfittings throughout. If so I might buy an imperialvariety box.

      It looked as if one should be able to dismantle it without removing the relief valve and it is helpful to have this confirmed. I think the question I should have been asking is -Will I encounter a stiff spring when I take out the split pin? In other words will I need to get the relief valve onto the bench to re-assemble or is it an easy job to sort out whilst crawling about under the car or from a pit? It looks as though the relief valve is non adjustable. Is this so?

        You'd be right on a stiff spring there Paul but not overly so - my experience is if you have a strong thumb you can get it back in without too much effort.

        Officially it is not adjustable, but that said it has not been unknown for the spring strength to be supplemented by some small washers..... and a stronger thumb still!

        This would be only undertaken knowing the risk to your timing chains as the tensioners are hydraulic..........

          Hi Russ and others,

          It proved impossible to extract the plunger from the body of the oil pressure relief valve so I had to get the oil pump and valve out. Being reluctant to try get the exhaust pipe off, I found that by dropping the oil filter and moving back the clutch master cylinder I could loosen the oil pump and free the valve. I found a suitable o ring though the old one looked ok and finally got everything back together.

          Now when Istarted it up I find that the oil pressure light won't go off. Needless to say I didn't run it for more than a minute or so but any suggestions? I did leave the oil filter full and poured oil into the valve body. What I didn't do was to fill the oil pump with oil. Looks like I shall have to to it all over again and try feed oil into the pump body.

          Amazing how these small jobs just escalate. It took me most of the afternoon to lose all oil pressure. I would have preferred to feed an oil consumption. I shall leave it now til the weekend.
