    Is this right?

View of the back of the overdrive, is this right or is it rotated?

The left hand mount is squashed while the other is Ok.

The clearance around the rear of the box in relation to the body etc looks equal so looks good!

Try loosening everthing then tightening equally each nut or bolt a bit at a time to the correct torque like you would a wheel and see if this makes a difference!

By the way I wish my car was that clean underneath a real credit to you

I take it that its a J type overdrive fitted, it looks like the speedo drive angle is all wrong to me?. The tail of the gearbox looks like its not sitting central in the tunnel. Have you just replaced the box ?

Don't get too techy, this is actually Mrs paul, Polly typing. Himself has gone to Oulyon Park to play with Formula Fords.

We have taken out, reconditioned, repainted and replaced everything. Paul does a very thorough job when he restores cars.

We thought it looked a little odd but couldn't see how to correct it. The gearbox is the original, as is the engine, the overdrive, we think, is another that came back from ORS instead of ours but the same (J type?)

Swapping the gearbox mount round doesn't look like it would work? Engien mounts look fine but were £(*&%(*"&£(% to get on.

I have attached a couple more pickies.

              Mrs Paul (aka Polly)

was the gearbox mounting easy to fit? or did you (or him) have to use force to get every thing to line up. Are the engine mountings both fitted in the correct position? From passed experience the engine and box line up quite well, and the gearbox mounting sits very central with equal loading on both mountings. If you release the gearbox mounting and just support the gearbox does it sit central or not, if notthen what is causing it not to, if it does then what is wrong with the mounting arrangement??

I think we will have to nite the bullet and try loosening off the mount. Maybe we can see if it twists. It looks lije it is under some strain.

I wasn't under the car at the time of installation, my job was leaning over the engine bay making sure none of the wiring/brakepipage got in the way.

Eldest son and hubby were underneath. I will tell him and he will get back to you all.

                Many thanks so far.

Here's a similar ish picture for under my Stag, it's a scan so quality's not as good but I think it shows that you're angled slightly to the left.

I'd first check the engine mount's are in front of the mounting flanges on both sides.

                    Hi Polly/Paul,

Do not beconcerned about the apparent rotation as this is correct, so is the angle of the speedo drive. As far as the off-centredness goes I would have to support Nick's idea of the front engine mountings being skew-whiff (is that how you spell it?) with maybe one of them being the wrong side of thechassis mounting post.

Hi guys, update after having a fiddle this afternoon......

First I loosened the gearbox mount, with jack under overdrive. There was definitely a bias toward the nearside of the car, but about 10mm.

Loosened both front engine mounts. Rear of gearbox would then move quite easily, so I centrallised it and replaced the gearbox mount. All looked OK.

Next tightened offside front engine mount and guess what? It pulled it over again to just where I started from. Just to check I tightened the nearside front engine mount but it made no difference.

                      So back to square 1.

Checked that both engine mounts are mounted on front face of the chassis rail bracket and they are.

The chassis rail mounts were not touched during restoration, so are as Triumph made them.

The parts bookshows that the part codes for the LH and RH engine mount are different (155003 and154994).Not sure why.

Any ideas on the orientation of the slots in the mount.

Not sure where to go from here, apart from taking both front mounts off and checking whether there is any clues.

                        Paul (or Polly),

Not only are the engine mounts different, but the brackets attached to the engine are handed as well. This picture may help show whether you have them all in the right places.

Thanks for that, dear old Rimmers.

We did have the engine mounts on upside down with the slots going side to side but it hasn't made any difference. Mounting brackets definitely the right way round.

                          Struggling on...
