    help -- panic

having completed my welding task and quite please with my selfI took the car out for a spin

but I had not gone far when it started spulttering and missing. looking at the fuel gauge and warning lightI tried to get to the nearest petrol garage only to stop just outside the garage.

I pushed the car to the pump and filled it with unleaded, but it would still not start.

when I lifted the bonnet to investigate I noticed fluid in the top of the vee and then running down the cam cover and down the engine onto the exhaust. I realisedI HAD LEFT THE IGNITION ON AND RAN ROUND TO TURN IT OFF.

it was petrol coming from the air filter box.

when I removed the cover the box and elbow adaptors was full of fuel

removing the breather elbows from the carbs and then putting the ignition back on petrol was pumping out of the right carb breather pipe

any ideas as to what has gone wrong and what should I be looking at to fix it

    any sensible suggestions please

    Hi Roger
Had a fuel spillage myself a week ago in Kimbolton.
Best I can come up with is that the valve in the float chamber as got some dirt in it and the overflow is blocked. Even with it not blocked fuel will tend to get everywhere.
Mine was caused by not changing the fuel filter after a lay up.
I'm afraid it will mean a strip down of the carbs. to find the problem.(mine was a extreemly tiny piece of grit)
Hope you get it going soon.

        Hi Roger,
From my own limited experience -

A few months ago I noticed my fuel filter full of rust.
This led me to removing the petrol tank and getting it renovated.
Just to be on the safe side I took the carbs off ,replaced the float chamber valves, cleaned out the float chamber and replaced the diaphragms.

When I primed the carbs I had fuel pour out of the left carb.
Took carbs off again, checked valve, tweaked the float height and refitted.

This sorted it out for me.
It should be borne in mind that this was the first time I had taken the carbs off.
May be worth checking the fuel filter for rust.

          Hi Roger
Yes item 40 is the needle valve in the float chamber
I have attached a picture of the overflows they are the ones with the blue pipe they T together and vent in a rigid pipe down the front of the engine,
The black pipes are the breathers which connects to the air box.
          hope this helps

              hi

this one one of the reasons i fitted a holley

carbs all reconditioned with all new parts ,it still flooded, replaced the needle valves again.ok for a bit then went on trip to cornwall, stuck in traffic at stonehenge, guess what carbs flooding again

that was the last straw for me off they came

know it does not help you.but just my experience

Needle valve is stuck. Pull the inertia switch and run the carbs dry, when the engine dies, press the inertia back in and the pressure of the petrol usually frees the valve. Solved many by this method, quick and easy.

sounds like its flooded, take the plugs out and turn it over for a few seconds, remember to switch the inertia switch off first.
