Basically that is it - there is a spare terminal on the other side of the rheostat

Each side of the rheostat has 2 terminals, so you use one side or the other to join the 2 wires together - immediately obvious when you drop the dash back (the rheostat is mounted to the fascia, not the wooden panel with the gauges)

Yup - and very effectively, but not so bright it's a nuisance
