    Starting

    Just bought my Stag. It has lumenition.

    Tried to start it today for the first time after buying it a week ago. Full choke, it took on the second turn of the keyand I moved the choketo half. I moved it out of the garage, leaving the engine running to shut the door, then when i tried to pull away it stalled. Wouldn't start thereafter - flooded?

    Pushed it back in the garage and will try again later.

    Any general tips on starting? Should I wait 5 minutes for it to warm up before moving off? Choke seetting?

    Mine's full choke to start and then back in to 1/3 once running, and most I've come across are pretty similar...

    Odds are you have flooded the beast, so choke off and full throttle while cranking until it's firing, back the throttle off to just above idle position until it catches and runs, and then once it's going you can pull the choke out to fast idle (1/4 - 1/3 choke movement) for warm up/drive-off.

    Of course your engine/carbs may need tuning and setting up properly and therefore may have a tendency to flood anyway......

      Hi Tabbers, Like you I have had my Stag for just over a week. The guy I bought it from gave me a tip. No it was'nt a fiver.
      He said that if the carbs flood use the pump cut out switch to isolate the pump. Turn it over a few times, reset the pump isolation switch and try again.
      I think it will work, what do other 'Staggers' think?

        The flooding will have already taken place - that method will only help if it has flooded because there is a fault with the floats or needle valve that is allowing fuel to continue to be fed after the carb should have said "enough!". We have to deal with the excess already in the manifold and cylinders and stopping the fuel pump is like trying to bribe the engine to start with a cheese sandwich - ain't gonna help.

        Just leaving the choke in and opening the throttle, or another old trick I used to use on broken down Montegos and Maestros when the electronic autochoke went doolally and that is to release the carb dampers, tilt them to one side and drag the carb pistons up to the top of the travel while someone else cranks with the throttle down a bit. This opens up the airflow massively but there is negligible venturi effect so it doesn't drag any fuel from the jets.... almost guaranteed to start them....

          Bit of care needed here, the air filter can literally fill with petrol through the breather pipes, make certain you haven't got a litre of petrol waiting to join in the discussion ! ! ! Martin.

              This happened to me last week

              the fright was that I had left the ignition on and went to investigate in the engine bay why it would not start. looking at fluid running down the vee and trickleing back onto the exhaust my first thought was it was water having just replaced the hoses then I noticed petrol pouring out of the air filter box and run round turn the ignition off
