Tappet noise can it be eliminated

Been to a local classic car meet tonight and 4 Stags turned up. Anyway discussion got around to tappet noise and 3 of us were comparing the various noises from our engines and the question was asked can the tappet noise, mainly coming from around No 6 on the passenger side be eliminated or is it something we have to live with. I have recently fitted a recon head and it taps just like the one I took off:?.

Only Stag engine that didnt tap was the Stag with the Ford V6 in it, exhaust note sounded good and the engine was really quiet.

The question is did they fit new tappet buckets or just shotblast the old ones? The sides can wear concave and they can rock making a tappet noise...

I think it is quite common around No.6. it seems to suffer from lack of oil more than the others.

Russ forgive my ignorance but isit just a case then of replacing the buckets with new ones and if so will this mean having to adjust the tappet shims to suit the new buckets.

Bob, remember you mentioning this at ND when we were sorting the fuel leak on Andys Stag.

Actually its not me whos concerned although must admit to listening out for the tapping after last nights discussion. One of the guys who was with us last night owns a Stag and works on the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight and was at Goodwood with the Hurricane and told me that a blue Stag that was up for auction had a really quite and smooth engine, making his engine and mine for that matter sound noisy. I personally thought his engine was quieter than mine but he is quite concerned about the noise hence the question.

That's a yes and another yes I'm afraid. If you take out a bucket, hold it side by side with a new one, you'll see daylight in between them if the old one is worn. Also the concave side when worn allows the oil to drain back past the tappet quicker with obvious consequences...

I have this problem, and yes I have slightly concave buckets. I measure only about 4 thou wear at the worst point.
The thing is 10,000 miles ago i changed my buckets for new ones with the same problem.
I therefore assume I have worn holes, and this has resulted in the new buckets wearing quickly.
I can't check this without removing a head, but I think this is my problem.
Solution will be to overbore the holes and fit oversize buckets.
              Mike.

                Hi Dave

                How noisy? At what temp?

Mine are a little noisy on start up for about 10-15sec then you can't here them at all, the engine was rebuilt by a guy in Hinckley 13000 miles ago unfortunately he's unable to help with regards to what work was done as he died the day after finishing the engine!:shock:and therefore did not do an invoice for the work

All the Stags that I have owned have had almost silent valve train so it must be down to parts being worn or care of reassembly?

Mine was really quiet, but when I fitted a replacement head recently to my disgust it nowticks like a good 'un!:XI used the valves, springs and buckets from my original head and the valve guides in my replacement head are good. I suppose I must have worn bucket holes too. To say I am annoyed is the understatement of the year!! The ticking is at its absolute worst when restarting after a heatsoak. It is quiet when cold!

Dave - I have had this on my Stag ever since I bought it and had thought it was one "loose" tappet. Looks as though I'd better get some shims and a replacement bucket before I look at it over the winter.

Anyone got a preferred supplier for the buckets - knowing the quality issues with parts like this?

p.s. On another point recently ordered a Stromberg carb adjusting tool - £3.75 from Speedy Spares - cheaper than I've seen from the usual suspects - sell some other Stag/Triumph/Rootes parts as well. Its not arrived yet - so I'll update later.
