registration anomoly

:?going to collect my new project stag tomorow and after checking the dvla website it clearly states the car was first registered on 1/5/98 how can this be the car is a tax exempt 73 model .the owner has not got any info to help and lost the log book:shock:he bought it with a mate to do up and share but they fell out and now i bought it but not paid yet should i be asking any questions or getting some type of aggreement from both of them.im just a little concerned about how i stand on ownership in the eyes of the law .

Hi Steve,

have you HPI checked this car. You can do it on line.It costs about £20 but is well worth it. If you can obtain the VIN chassis and engine numbers this may help shine some light on the car's history.

If you can't establish title or history I'd walk away. Imagine the nightmare of potentially spending thousnds on restoration and building a great car only to find you have no title to it later on.

HPI also have deal with some insurance company. As part of the fee, they give you 7 days drive it away comphrensive insurance. Very good for group 20 cars to give a few days to get quotes

Hi Steve,

I have experienced this before.

It is likely that the car was used abroad. The date of registration is the date the car was re-registered back in the UK, the date of manufacture is still taken into account for road tax.

It is not likely to be something to worry about. If there was a V5 it would state "previously used or registered abroad", could have gone out with somebody in the forces etc

well looking good so far just hpi checked and came back clean ,thanks andy and also found out about the free drivaway insurance from aviva 7 days free if you ask for a quotecheers graham.

burt thanks for the info hope your right......the hpi report says its only had one owner before this pair but agrees with first reg date and gives no info prior to 1st reg.

now just need to sort out how to get a reciept from two owners who hate each other and dont talk and make sure it is credible. any ideas:?

Write your own receipt and get them to sign it. If they don't, walk away.

I was keeping an eye on that as well but think one stag is enough at the moment for me - although i am looking at an E46 330CI bmw tomm as an everyday car ...... Dont tell SWMBO though ( i kinda see the BMW as a modern day Stag really)

Steve ,has it got 2 names on the V5 then ? Is it a husband and wife that hate each other,Stags can do that to a marrage.:P

My car waqs registered in 1978 when it was imported back to the UK from IOM

original build was 1971 hence tax excempt

DLVA gave me a history of the car for a fee but only got the importer to the UK no info on owners in IOM

hi roger ,after reading through all the history i have found out that the car was taken to germany ,british forces posted overseas.it has a low ld no just got to find out what the last no for exemption was if i can find it it was on here somewhere.
