    Stag owners nightmare

Chris (VMAD) has done my timing chains for me, also very kindly went the extra mile and tweaked the ignition timing and other work......

Chris showed me the old tensioner,...........The previous owner must have had the chains replaced ( or not) by amechanic, what the mechanic done was removed the tensioner and very cleverly filed down the holewhere the bolt fits and made an oblong hole just enough to put on more tension on the chains, probably charged him for fitting all new chains, guides and tensioners.

The result was damage to the guides, chains sprockets. One of the guides had a very deep groove.I am ever so glad to have befriended Chris, who immediately suggested that my chains needed changing when I firstmet him.

I had also been adviced that my chains could last another 5000 miles( not Chris).

Looking at the condition of the tampered with Tensioner and the guides etc, I reckondestruction of the enginewas imminent.

Anyway,..The results of the new chains etc..

    1. No more tappety noises from the engine not from left bank nor right.

2.engine absolutely quite and still, idles at 650 rpm.

    3. no more harse clunking when changinggears from stand stillfrom park to reverse or park to drive, drive to reverse.

4.Goes like the devil, really pulls. Sound beautiful.

5.Temp used to beupright now just a tit over the "E" andstays there.

6.Engine breathing nicely now, composition fron the exhaust as it should be.

Gent's what would be the first indication that the timing chains require attention. My old girl has covered 70000 Miles but what history I have doesnt say when they were last done?? Have.nt been an owner for long bought it in the spring

When starting up you will hear the chains rattle ( sound like a tinful of ball bearings),once oil have circulated/ engine warm up they (chains) stop rattling. I have been told (Tony Hart) if they keep on sounding even when engine is at running temp then chain replacement is imminent.

                        Sukh,

only ever heard it on one stag in twenty years and it was a fair old rattle on cold and you could lift the chain off the sprocket when oil cap off with a hooked scriber:shock:
second indicator is when the engine dont want to turn cos the valves are in the way:shock::shock::shock::shock:sure others have got more gory details.

Ok, in that case then you could hear a rattling on start up. If you take the cam cover off, you can check the chains and sprockets for wear marks, and also shine a torch down the front and see how far out the tensioners are.

If in doubt I would change them as the consequences don't bear thinking about.
