    whining and vibration

    Hi

My Stag has a whine that comes in at 60mph and vibration, the two may or may not be connected.I have put molyslip in the diff but this has not made any difference, could it be a wheel bearing? Any thoughts guys:?

    Cheers Cliff

Does the noise/vibration change power on v. coasting? Does it get worse going around a left or right hand bend? Any cluncks?

Wheel balance could be a cause off the vibration

Does come through the steering wheel or the whole car?

Cliff, propshaft vibration is quite common. Can be caused by bad U/Js, or play in the BW35 rear bearing.

Whine is usually diff but could be gearbox esp if manual (I cant remeber if yours is manual or auto)

Hi Guys thanks for your replys, the noise comes in at about 60mph and fade out about 65mph but will hear it again at 70 mph,it don't change if you turn the steering left or right but if I coast at thesespeeds thewhining stops, the gearbox [manual] and diff have both been rebuilt this year so I hope it's not one of these,if it was the diff should'nt the molyslip make some difference!

when this has happened to my stag it has been the diff nose bearing. After 4 of these things in as many years I bought from a different source and so far so good...

I forgot to say that sometimes when I reverse I get a cluncky clicky kind of noise

Check all the U/Js, (Prop and drive shafts), that would be my guess.

would worn UJs make a whining sound?

Maybe, but the clunking when reversing suggests U/Js,so worth a look and easy to eliminate.

Hi Richard,Can I ask where you got your lastest bearing from?

                      Many Thanks

If you have had a new diff, check the pinion shaft is tight, may be unwinding and causing slack in the diff.

local bearing supplier in High Wycombe. The bearing size itself is pretty standard and so I was able to buy it over the "trade" counter

Have you had similar reliability issues?
