    Anyone used the Redex Products

    Still on my backfiring issue.

Changed the filter and the electronic ignition.

Checked the diaphrams with the pot suggestion and both raised between 1/8 " and 1/4" so guess this looked ok.

Will change all the electrical things tomorrow, caps, leads, plugs, coil, rotor armwith my sparesetc and see if this makes a difference.

If not I will then open the arbs and check te diaphrams as previously suggested even though the test looked ok.

If this all fails then I guess I need togo the sticky value route.

Was looking around for possible products if I should need them and Redex seems to be the one that keeps popping up.

So my question is has anyone used these products to solve such issues on a Stag, is Redex the standard, are there other product recommendations as I will need to ship these n from the UK, I will need to find a good supplier.

When still active professionally in the workshop, the Rover T16 engine had a serious issue with deposits on the valve stems causing them to stick.

We used Forte fuel system cleaner (they called it Gas Treatment) which came in a can about the same size as a standard coke can. We stuck one can in the fuel tank, and another directly into the intake of the running engine - we brought the engine to about 3000rpm, and fed the contents of the can direct into the engine via a manifold vacuum pipe using a pipe clamp to regulate the flow so the engine was just able to keep running, but with maximum possible flow of the cleaner. This made the engine smoke really badly while it was being 'fed', and for a mile or so on road test but it was pretty effective at dissolving the carbon buildup on valve stems. I have one can left in my garage, so if you want I can get the full details off the can and see if it's still available nowadays. ....

PS I've just checked and it can still be bought for £12 a 500ml bottle from camskill.co.UK.

      That would be useful thx.

Lets hope some of my other activities tomorrow solve the issue as I think the sticky value is a last resort I think.

What still puzzles me is that I dont see how a sticky valve would show itself at 70 MPH on the motorway and thereafter without showing up intermittently before hand.

Dont put yourself out to get the info I will ping you later if I need it.

      Cheers

The problem of my backfiring issue turned out to be a cracked Distributor Cap.

Replaced the cap and all is fine again.

        Thanks for the advice again.

I had similar problem of backfiring and traced it to the breather pipe to cam cover. It wasn't new but looked ok albeit sloppy fitted a jubillee clip and the difference was amazing, even tickover improved. Curiously I also removed the breather while running, blocked thecover hole with a fingerand oilspurted from one cam cover screw. I'd overtightened the screw and bottomed on the stud, compressing the gasket. What comes out must go in....

Russ Hi,This sounds a useful product, would it be possible for the moderator to move this to the recent thread on additives with this being really useful information I thought it might be possible to create a sticky for proven additives.

            Regards Mark

Redex does pretty-much the same thing..... in the tank, or straight into the carb throats, lots of nice rubbish out of the exhaust

Years ago my dealer VW mechanic friendtold me they would get RO80's come in with the Wankel engine running very poorly, no power and smoking. They would ask the owner to go away and come back in 2 hours when it would be fixed. Car was taken round the back one mechanic sat inside with his foot flat down on the accelerator while another poured the contents of a tin of Redex down the inlet. The emgine screamed like a bashee and smoke blotted out the entire industrial estate but the 'Rotor tip seals' freed themselves and the car went back to the turbine smoothness only a wankel can produce. Customer collected car and was delighted with the new 'performance'

In my pre-pubescent days manning the pumps in the days when it was safe to let 2 kids look after a garage on Sunday, they had redex oil can squirters, you'd put "shots" of this in the tank on request. Little did the boss know that these made excellent guns as the 2 kids played cops around the punmps.....I think the customers moaned about the mess tho.
