    No movement in head studs

Last night I tried loosening a couple of head studs before anything else on the basis of if their too tight I re-torque the head and head for a friends garage at a later date when he can tackle the job.Its been a long while since I did this job, twenty years or more on another stag I owned.

There was no give in them, with the stud extractor in place I thought I had started one but the slot on the stud still said a quarter past three.I will get some more penetrating oil on them today and over the weekend but after that I might run it round to my mates if no joy.

        Hi Mark

I recently had a lot of trouble getting the studs out of one of my heads. I tried freeze & release but it didn't work for meI eventually made a bracket and moved the head using three bottle jacks after weakening the studs by drilling the centres. There is a long thread on it called 'head stud removal - help!' - don't know how to put a link in I'm afraid! I stripped a stud extractor too!

        Good luck

            Thanks Brian and Russ.

I thought the stud extractor might have lasted a bit better and got a couple out.Ive got time as the weather cools down so I will persevere with the plus gas and give the freeze and release a go,dont seem too promising mind you.

Just another idea but as everything ismore or less still attached on my car would starting the car up for a short while and then quicky try and undo the studs help whilst the alloy head expands slightly quicker than the steel studs?

Yes Russ its a Fantic Chopper,I owned one when I was sixteen(YRT 192N Where are you now?)although this is not my old one in the avvie,I had a brand new Gitane Champion(UNM 96R)before I owned my Fantic,I lasted four months on itand wrote it off in Bury St Edmunds, seventeen was eight months away so I had to get another moped hence the purchase of the Fantic. Both were powered by aMoto Minerelli six speed engine/gearbox and I was clocked at a true 64 mph on the Gitane although the Huret speedo on it was showing 80mph at the time.:?

                Thanks for that Stu.

It was totally original when I owned it like the one in the avvie, sounds like towards the end of its life it had a sunday morning spray job.

I used it on a bolt on something on the Stagbut I cannot remember what now! but it was nothing like a head stud.It worked ok but I am not sure if the cooling actionwill penetrate for enough on a head stud, I wonder if the head will conduct the cooling action away?Worth a try though. Fingers crossed for you - good luck
