      Noooo!

      probably old stock, my car is r reg 1977, and got 80000 on the clock, but i have no idea when the tyres were last changed,lots of tread but cracks showing!

      what the hell we could all die tomorrow !

        On the subject of old tyres. I got my first Stag on Wednesday and drove it 410 miles home from Scotland. We stopped every 2 hours for about 45 minutes to break up the journey. We kept to 60mph.

        The car went brilliant didnt miss a beat all 410 miles, however at 370 miles and 60mph on the A14 one of the front tyres exploded, luckily I was able to pull into a layby and await the AA. Far too dangerous a position to change a wheel.

        Anyway the point is the car had really old tyres a few of them must have been 15 years old and the car has only had little use in that time.

        We were lucky, it could be really dangerous so I'd advise anyone with old tyres to change them, the tread is all good on all my tyres - except the exploded one! However I'm having 5 new tyres put on to be safe.

          Congrats on the car and glad everyone was alright.

          I'm sure I read somewhere that there is a recommendation to change tyres every5 years irrespective of mileage due tothe natural breakdown of the material.Moisture within the air used to pump them up eats away from inside at the rubber causing it to perish and crack. Nitrogen does not cause this andtends not to leak, therefore retaining pressures better.

          This may be seen as a little extreme, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, after all, there's little protection in a stag if you can't control a blowout.

            I too have suffered a high speed blowout (approx 70 mph ) just as the dual carriage way I was on went down to one lane for road works, before I had found a convenient place to stop the tyre shed its tread and had to make a precarious tyre change with traffic thundering past, my wife hanging on to the dog's collar and me struggling to retrieve the spare from the boot! I hasten to add at this point that this was not in the Stag but my mondeo.

            New tyres for the Stag are high on my list of priorites but in the mean time everyone I'm sure will remember to keep a check on tyre pressures as this is often a cause of tyre failure and is easily overlooked
