    Today's New Experience

After 18 years of ownership, today I had my first experience of travelling in the passenger seat of my own car. I have added my Daughter to the insurance policy and we went for her first drive this afternoon. After a nervous start she settled down and drove it well. From the passenger seat it seemed at lot faster than the speedo said, probably due to the proximity of the hedges .

Her verdict? It was a lot lighter to drive than she thought it would be, but she was not impressed by the brakes. Considering she drives a brand new Polo, this is probably not surprising.

How long will it be before I go to take theStag out and find she has beaten me to it?

You are a very brave man . I always need a few glasses of wine after I've been out with my 19yr old daughter in her battered old Astra, but she's desperate to drive my Stag. At the moment I'm using insurance as an excuse!

I have a brand new Mondeo and my wife has a Rover 114GSI but neither of these newer cars match the brakes on the Stag for feel and power!

Have you got braided hoses fitted and fresh fluid recently? If not I can recommend the hoses very highly.

My 20 year old daughter has just returned from Hammersmith in some distress because she has just had her first ever accident -she rear-ended an Audi A4 at the Hogarth roundabout. Methinks a bit too late for braided hoses and new fluid in the family Punto . . . :?

          Hi, Stu,

Yes I have braided hoses. Possibly one of the first Stags to have them. I live only a couple of miles from the Goodridge factory and they made them for me. I had to go back because at the time they believed that the rear hoses on the Stag were the same both sides. They then changed their specification and have sold many sets since then.

The fluid is also fairly new. I had to change the rear cylinders for the last MOT. The servo also works correctly, and, with new rear cylinders, the Stag had no problem passing the test.

The reason she was unimpressed was, I believe, because the relative weight of the Stag and the way the system is designed makes the pedal effort required considerably more than on a modern Polo. This is quite ironic, as myMother'sold 1986 Polo had dreadful brakes, but that model always did.
