    Engine Vibration

    Hi all,

    I have a bad vibration from the engine of my Stag. It seems to vary with engine revs. It is there even when car is not moving.

    Anyone give us any clues?

    I would check the engine mounts as first port of call, and then gearbox mounts, to make sure they are there and not perished to bu**ery:shock:

      I would check the engine mountings as hasAl said. When I replaced mine recently they were very 'saggy' and soft, I imagine if they are very bad the engine could touch the body. I used two solid ones as I could not find one with the slot in it. There is a little vibration because of this but nothing much.

        Yes, engine, gearbox or exhaustmountings can cause it.

        Also, does the engine sound off? If the carbs are badly out of balance (eg one diaphragm has broken or air valve stuck) the engine will rock and vibrate (shake).

        And valve timing; if one bank has the cam timing one or more teethslipped or mistimed, it will cause the engine to rock.

          Most likely cause is a failing viscous coupling.

                Hi Mike

                You say vibration, do you mean resonance when revving or shaking due to misfiring?

                Has this suddenly happened?

                Have you changed anything?

                  Hi Andrew,

                  It does sound like resonance but you can feel the vibration through the car whilst stationary, and it varies with the engine revs. How would I check the viscous coupling?

                  I guess it happened in my shunt with the car in front last year, but the car was off the road for 9 months for repair etc, and I have been wondering about the cause for the last 3 months.

                    Me too. Been their and have the brown stained trousers to go with the whole experience.

                    To check it and with the engine off :lolz: grab hold of the fan and see if there is any play in the bearing that allows the fan to wiggle forwards and backwards. If there is. Change it asap before the blades kiss the rad and/or punch holes in your bonnet.

                            could also be the crankshaft pulley out of balance, check the run out as the engine ticks over,also if it is a mod gearbox is fittedget someone to depress the clutch while ticking over and see if there is foreward movement on the crankshaft.
