Water in The " V" Update/technical info help

    Good Day

Have stripped Carbs off and we have left the inlet manifold in place as no leaks from the gaskets - all looks good - with a mirror we can see that the gasket for the water pump is ok no visable leaks - but the water is coming out from underneath the water pump housing - could this mean the water pump is leaking past the shaft seals?

    Any Ideas!!

    Hi Steve
I've had a similar leak which was the graphite seal in the water pump.
It took me two goes to sort it out as it still leaked after a pump rebuild.
The fault on the rebuild was I has not checked if the impeller had been skimmed previously and had had to do a heavy skim to remove pitting from the bearing face leading to the seal face not being in the correct position.
Fitting a modified seal including a ceramic running face (supplied by LD parts) has corrected this.
    Hope this helps

      Barry,

Thanks for that - we guessed the water pumpwould be the problem - will have the water pump sorted out did you buy new water pump kit from LD parts ? will make sure we have the face skimmed - did you do all the skimming yourself? and info re new graphite seal / ceramic running face, thanks again

I sent mine to a guy recommended on this Forum, will check old posts as his name has escaped me, he reconditioned my pump for £35 and I got it back within a week, he was also very knowledgeable on Stags and a nice chap to deal with. I will post his details once I find them. I thought it would be your pump as the symptoms were exactly the same as mine when the pump went on my Stag.

                  Hi Steve
I see that you have had good advice from others regarding getting the pump refurbished.
Yes I did do it myself, though I would not recommend it to someone without some engineering facilities. Facing the bottom of the impeller is tricky and besides having to take off more than I wanted to, I was still not able to get out all the imperfections as the picture shows. As you can see I have made a jig and tooling based on the Triumph tooling to ensure that I reassemble the pump without damage.
When removing the pump remember that the bolt on the top of the impeller is left hand thread and though I have been able to extract old pumps easily, if you have to pull a new one you will need a slide hammer with a adaptor.
Also check to see if the inside of the pump cover is scored, this can be caused by the cover not having been put on correctly and the impeller fouling.
Remember to have plenty of gasket sealant when reassembling as running out whilst putting the inlet manifold on is frustrating. I now seem to be buying the stuff in industrial quanties.

                  Happy servicing
