    Timing chain tensioners

    Help needed please!

I have just fitted new timing chains, tensioners & sprockets, following the guidance given in various workshop manuals.

Everything seemed to go fine, but when I removed the "spacers" from the tensioners - nothing! I was expecting them to extend under spring pressure. Do they actually only extend when the engine is running, ie. by oil pressure?

    Thanks.

When you remove the spacer you should squeeze together the shoe and the body of the tensioner. The shoe should touch the bodyand the tensioner should then release to the first notch of its travel. You will not now be able to push the shoe all the way back into the body.

The shoeshould only extend a little further than when the spacer was fitted if you have adjusted the chains correctly.
