    Bonnet scraping paint off

On opening the bonnet on my car the leading edge of the paint is scraped off on the vertical surface of the panel in front (907073 in attachment). It has been suggested to me that the return edge of this panel needs to be beaten concave to give the bonnet more room, has anyone done this? if so, any photo's?

sounds like the bonnet wants adjusting to me not the panel.

Believe me, I've tried, there is no further clearance at the rear end of the bonnet to bring it back any further. The car has been worked on at the front and it may be that there is some poor panel alignment at play here but if knocking a piece concave will work it's worth a try.

does this include adjusting the grill at the top as that has adjustment on it to bring the bonnet up more

          Hi Ian

After having to remove my bonnet to do my timing chains and marking the hinges I still had fun and games getting the bonnet alignment right, when the bonnet lifts up there is such a small tolerence(fag paper)between the panel you mention and the bonnet.

Have you got a gap at the air intake grill end?

It is almost touching on the O/S end of the grill edge, more of a gap on the N/S it definately doesn't appear to sit square but the leading edge gap appears consistent along its length

I'll look at that right away, didn't know it was adjustable.

It didn't make a lot of difference I'm afraid, I'll need to borrow another pair of hands and have a good go at it next weekend.

Did this problem get resolved? the reason I ask is that I have the same issue.

when i had my bonnet of at the week end, i noticed the panel in front of the bonnet does have a small curve on the inside edge, also when looking up Drews post, i see he has had to reshape his

                      hope that helps Dave

Mine is not hitting the panel in front, it is hitting the panel below but only when the bonnet is in the fully open position

Making that panel concave will damage or crack the paint on the top i would imagine.

Its a shame ya cant get an oxy torch on it to heat it up and stretch the metal but again it will cause damage.

I swapped the bonnet out Terry and this largely fixed the problem, alongside careful adjustment of the screws. I suspect the problem might be caused by people raising the bonnet by one corner, rather than in the middle, thereby putting stress on the hinges and warping the bonnet over time.
