what is this please?

I have a floating lead on this alternator and do not know what it is or why there is no obvious connection point with the length of lead.

hopefully, the box/lead are clear on this picture.

It is the "battery sensing" lead. Your alternator looks non standard and does not need it.

looks like a supressor to stop high frequency interferance to radio etc.

Guilty as charged...

It has two of these suppressor things.One is connected and one isnt. The rev counter is also fairly hyper and the alternator doesnt seem to regulate voltage that well. I had my hopes on that loose lead being the root of my problem...
