    overdrive wiring

    Hi all

I seem to have a recurring problem with my overdrive wiring, between switch and gearbox. I normally entrust my work to local specialist who has repaired broken wires on a couple of occasions,He has not replaced the wire and from memory I think that it has been made up from some non standard multi strand bell wire. I am looking at buying a new section of wiring, and fitting it myself, my question is can this job be done from inside the car and is there any thing that I should look out for that may be causing the wire to break apart from the obvious sharp edges etc.

    Thanks

    Hi Mick

You can buy the two wires that go up the gearstick to the switch, brown and blue if I remember and this is easy to do from inside the car. If you are referring to the wiring that goes on top of the gearbox, then this is slightly more awkward but can be done with patience. Under the coin tray wood panel, there is a large grommet that can be pulled out and you can access but not remove the over drive switch. Firstly I would remove the wires and connect them together to by pass the switch and if all works OK, it will mean replacing the switch which is OK to do. If not, then a loom can be fitted but fiddly and from underneath.

    Hope this helps

        Hi Mick,

The two wires that run up inside the gearlever to the switch are renowned for breaking due to the frequent movement of the lever. You can buy the wires, complete with correct connections, from http://www.angtriumph.co.uk/stagodgearleverloom.html

If you use a length of windscreen washer tube to run them in they will last for years.

My car is an auto so I don't have the problem but it seems to me that if the wires keep breaking then the wire is not flexible enough. The loom that Dave posted the link to just looks like normal mains two core - this is not at all flexible. The copper cable does not have enough strands. If it was my car I think I would make up a loom using "extraflex" cable. This is the stuff used on quality test meters. It has lots of starnds of very fine copper and is designed to constantly flex without breaking.

This stuff from Maplin would do the job:

          http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=9910

Part no BJ40T for the red & BJ41U for the black

Its also insulated with thick silicone rubber.

            Hi Mick,

The problem I experienced with the O/D wiring was caused by the fitting of the gear knob. I screwed the knob on too far. This reduced the amount of room within the knob for the wiring. The wirng was pinched tight - splitting the insulation and causing a short circuit onto the steel gear lever. The fuse blew.

So when you screw the knob on only screw it far enough to fill thethickness of the internal locknut. Then tighten up the ferrule nut below the knob. This gives you the maximum internal clearance for the wiring inside the knob cavity and should prevent any trapped and damaged wiring.

            Robert.

Fitting a relay also helps as the gear stick wiring is not as think as the O/D wiring

The fuse kept blowing after a coupleof flicks of the switchon mine when i first got it, i changed the switch and gear stick wiring but still had the same problem, fitted a relay and problem solved
