I am good but not that good !

Picked up a decent second hand diff, minimum backlash. It had evdence of oil leakage but i am not too worried about this.I have taken off the nose piece and and removed the bearing which i willeventually replace along with the pinion seal. No real problems there.

The inner drive shaft (item 34 page 105 Haynes manual) shows eveidence of oil leakage also. I have removed the four bolts item 26 and removed the drive shaft as a complete assembley i.e. Bearing, seal and item 28 flange (no jokes please) I have managed to remove the nyloc nut item 30 but everything else is mated to the shaft for life, as in the bearing and the flange. Short of finding a local engineering company how do i take the assembly apart so that i can change the seal / bearing. I have done some jobs on my Stags in my time but this is one that i think the Stag may beat me on. I have already tried heat, releasing oil and a lot of brute force and not a little ignorance. Any suggestions welcome.

Sometimes a good three legged puller will shift the flange but you have to be careful not to distort the flange with the amount of force required. The secret of sucsess is often to tighten the puller as much as you dare then belt the end of the puller where the socket wrench fits with a hammer, this will often be enough to shock the flange free. It is on a taper so once it moves it's off.

Its funny you should say that, when i left the job this evening i was using a three leg puller. I will tighten it as you say then give it a bang and see what happens, thanks

I did this job on mine recently and used a hydraulic press to seperate. If yours is anywhere near as tight I'd be very careful not to damge things with a three-legged affair.
Before mine let go it had twisted the frame of the press pretty badly and when it did go the shaft blew clear through the six layers of corrugated cardboard I'd piled up on the floor to stop it damaging anything! It also cut clean through the airline feeding the press.......good job I was only half trying to catch it!!!

Find a mate with a press and volunteer to make the tea

I Have worked out how to do it without pullers or a press. All i did was simply cut the bearing off using an angle grinder. It requires a steady hand and some thought as to where the cuts are made. Strategic cuts coupled with the use of a chisel and lump hammer saw off both the inner and outer races.I may purchase a large vice as i need a bigger one and use this to'press' the new bearing on using a drift. If this fails i will go to a garage and get them to pressthe bearings on and give them 'a drink' for their troubles. Both the left and right seals were pretty worn.

I replaced the seals on the inner driveshafts then took the shafts and new bearings to work where there happens to be a 30 TON press. I used this to press the new bearings on. As i was pressing on the first bearing there was an almighty bang. I thought i had split the inner race, it was in fact the bearing starting to go down the shaft, talk about infererance fit ! Here is what i did in a nutshell:-

1 Go to James Paddock look through the 10-18 second hand diffs that they have

2 Pick one with minimal backlash

3 Lash it in to your boot and take it home

4 Remove nose peice and weld in a bit of angle iron to give in increased strenght, having removed old bearing first

5 Change pinion seal, fit new bearing

6 Put back together with a bit of sealant

7 Remove output shafts (inner drive shafts) Cut bearings off using an angle grinder

8 Remove old oil seals and fit new ones (correct way round)

            9Press on new bearings

10 Now have a pint or cuppa, whatever turns you on

            LEAKS ? WHAT LEAKS ?!
