    Engine oil and chain tensioners

    Hello everybody,

As I wrote before I erroneously filled in synthetic Castrol Formula RS 10W60 into the Stag engine. I use the same oil in the rebuilt TR6 engine. The rebuilder even threatened that the warranty would expire, if I used any other oil than the 10W60.

So I am tempted toleave that "thin" oil in the Stag engine.

My worry, however, iso the chain tensioners work properly with the 10W60 opl, too? Or can't they build up enough pressure to keep the chains tight?

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

    Kind regards, Dieter.

A synthetic 10w 60 oil is actually thicker than say a mineral 20w 50 at running temperature, so is not a "thin oil".

Whether synthetic or mineral, its irrelavent, its the viscosity rating of the oil thats important. At running temperature the 10w 60 has a viscosity of 24cst at 100 degrees C, and a 20w 50 has a viscosity of 18.5cst at 100 degrees C, so your Castrol synthetic 10w 60 is a thicker oil!

When cold, either oil, whether it0w,10w or 20w has a much higher viscosity than when the oil is hot, so you never have a situation where the oil is too thin to build up enough pressure for the tensioner to work....thats why you always have a higher oil pressure on a cold engine compared to when it has warmed up.

          Thanks to everybody!

Maybe the problem today is the media: You read e.g. that engines which ran on mineral oil for a longer time should not be filled up with synthetic oils. The latter are said to contain detergents, which wash the old sediments and crusts out of the old engine thus blocking the oil feeds in the block.

Anyway: It is always a pleasure to read all the info, which you put in. There are not many people in my country who understand a Stag.

          Kind regards, Dieter.

It confuses the crap out of me too.But hey thats not too hard.

ill stick with magnatec if the PR is to be belived i like the sound of an oil that sticks and coats a cold engine, cos i understand all the damage is done whilst cold.

Gone are the days when i used Duckhams green for all engines! What an oil and even smelt nice:shock:
