Engine fading away to gentle stall!

Hi can anyone help? My Stag has been laid up for a while, I had to put in a replacement fuel pump to get it going again. Fired up ok but after a couple of miles the power faded away. Hitting the throttle hard gave no response just made it loose even more power. Pulled over and the engine eventually stopped altogether.

Trailered it to a local garage and spent a good chunk of money getting the carbs checked out - nothing replaced, fuel lines blown etc. Drove away from the garage and 10 miles down the road the same problem. The engine starts again ok after a rest of 10-20 minutes. Then a few more miles down the road and the same fiasco!

I've since had the replacement fuel pump off and it's been run in another Stag no problem, it's not running hot so that seems ok, checked the fuel tank breather pipe and that is clear.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it back to the carbs again? Problem I have is NE Scotland is a long way from any Stag specialists, local garages are either not interested, or don't have anyone that really knows what they are doing, as my wallet is testimony to, ouch! Sorry for the long post, thanks if you have any advice.

It could be fuel supply problem or ignition problem, so you need to test and eliminate one of them.

When it happens next, disconnect the fuel hose (eg at the filter) and check that fuel gushes out (intoa jar!)when you turn on the ignition. Then come back to us again.

Checking if the carb float chambers have emptied is an even better test but its not easy to get to them for that unless you can pull out the bung at the bottom (they do sometimes come out easily).

      Hi
I would check the fuel inertia switch is working properly,
you can join the two wires together to bypass it and rule it out.

      Rgds.......Al

p.s welcome go the forum BTW.

Try having a look at the Tempreture Compensators, I had the same problem after I got my car running after rebuilding it. The car would stall after it was nice and hot after about 12 minutes. You will most likely findthat there is old fuel blocking the holes. Remove the compensaters and their covers and clean the out with carb cleaner, and also the holes on the carbs where the compensators sit in.

I had a similar problem in times passim with the tank pickup pipe blocking through debris.......I blew the pipe backwards from the pump to the tank with an airline ( a footpump would do) and then fitted another fuel filter between the tank and the fuel pump to catch any dross........

              Still working fine..............

Have you changed the fuels filters?? There is one in the engine bay usually mounted on or near the LH suspension turret and there is sometimes one in the boot by the tank. If the car has been laid up for some time then the elements could have deteriorated and be restricting fuel flow. Next time you get it runing and it stops check you are getting full fuel flow to the carbs, just pull a pipe off and switch the ignition on - get someone to aim the pipe into a jamjar.

Thanks everyone! Amazed by the fast response! The fuel is fresh, stuck 20 litres in on the way back from the 'garage repair', it started to die shortly after that. I'll start with the inertia switch and go on from there, I can see fuel in the engine bay filter, but the level in it fluctuates, sometimes half full, sometimes empty with the fuel being delivered passing straight through to the carbs without pooling in the filter.

                  Thanks again everyone! Cheers....

Check the condenser in the distributor,i had problems on a dolly sprint years ago and it gave your symptoms, the car would run ok then die after a few miles after it cooled down it was fine for a while.5 mins to change, might be worth changing anyway if you can't find problem.£3.50 from Ldparts

                    Good luck

The fuel may be new but the old fuel could have left a layer of resin like residue in the important bits as happened to a small honda engine i had left for a couple of years. The jet was completely blocked by the stuff and there was a layer all around the float bowl.

                      Cheers Steve

also try running it with the fuel cap undone, just in case a breather is blocked and a vaccuum is stopping fuel being delivered .When the car cuts out, releasing the fuel cap would give of a hiss.

                          cheers Steve
