Best way to remove old underseal / What to replace it with

Gent's any idea what is the best and easiest way to remove all the old under-seal from Stag.

Whats the best way to stabalise any surface rust, and best way to seal it back up.

    All suggestions welcome gents

I removed my under seal with a heat gun and scraper, a mate of mine used a blow torch which was very effective but also hurt a lot when a big blob of it dripped on his arm! I followed up with paint stripper and wire wool. I used an angle grinder to remove what little rust there was followed by awipe of phosphoric acid and washed off with water.

Then I used Jotun primer, its a rubberised paint with zinc and other good stuff added, nasty, smellystuff to use, but it does cover very well, they use it on ships so I thought it would more than do the job on the underside of a car, followed by two coats of smoothrite, a coat of body deadener and three coats of body colour.

I tended to do one area at a time and then prime, since then I've been shown a tip to use spray on cooking oil to protect the unpainted surface prior to priming.

    Hope this helps,

    regards,

    Raoul

Im planning to do mine this Winter, gonna use a heat gun to get the underseal off, mines hammerited underneath the underseal so not sure what primer Im gonna use but Im thinking of using a product called Rustoleum as a top coat. Its available in loads of colours so a good enough match to body colour should be available and it can be applied with a brush with little or no brush marks.

Baz Stag whos on the forum used plasti dip as his top coat which looks very good.

Hi Mike,I have restored a few triumph cars but not a stag,if factory underseal i have used a splitting chisel which though time consuming does work, but if its the brush on after market type it will take longer.PATIENCE AND LOTS OF IT I'M AFRAID.Once off any small bits left behind will come off using a frip wheel.(i think thats what its called). On the base metal i used sprayed on bonda etch primer, then body schutze, then primer and paint. It worked for me and has lasted ten years.I dont have the car now its gone to denmark.I am not a professional at this, just experience of time. hope this helps,Colin.

I used a chisel and screw driver to get the factory underseal(or ziebart?) off and wiped over with white spirit to clean up afterwards. It worked on mine. Be careful not to get the bits in your eyes, some areas were brittle and went everywhere!

            Hi there,
I am currently using an old stubby screwdriver (blade tip obviously ) and a light hammer.
            The original underseal chips off.
It is quite laborious but comes off cleaner than the bit I used a heatgun on.

The fun starts when I forget to dust myself down properly and then walk through the house leaving a trail of underseal behind me

I crawled out from under my car to talk to my neighbour and he told me I looked like a coal miner! Bits of underseal everywhere!

I used a hot air gun to soften the underseal, scrapped it off and finally removed the remainder with paraffin on a rag. Be careful not to get it too hot, before wiping with paraffin rag!

I would not recommend using hammerite or smoothrite underneath a car. It becomes brittle after a while as itchips really easily leaving exposed metal underneath with obvious effects.

Mine was finished using a two pack stone chip paint with body colour over the top.

i started doing mine this weekend old chisel followed by wire wool and white spirit, i was amazed to see what fantastic condition the metal was in, it looked liked new under all that underseal, trouble is once you start its difficult to stop.
