What advantage do you get for changing? Reading up on this rear suspension it suffers from the same camber and toe issue the Triumph set up suffers from!
I think the camber change is a lot less ,better driveshafts ,better diff ,rear disk brakes .loads of cheapgood qualityspares (although you proberbly won't brake many bits)lots of diff ratios to choose from.
Not a cheap mod but once done you can forget back end maintainance. My back end needs a rebuild so i'm going to go for this from the outset.i've already got a set of image wheels & new tyrescheap £500 (would be £1500 new)and the backend of a 325i (diff ratio 1:3.64 )for £100.once i've sold originaldiff /wheels from my car it won't cost me too much.
I had 3 teeth come of my diff luckily at low speed if it had happend at 70 mph god knows what it would have done to the car.
i'd love to think i could do the welding myself but realisticly not an option for saftey reasons. So i am going to go with Monarch. Also i think insurance may be an issue if i diy it.sometimes its better to know your own limitations and in this case i'll be better off bolting on well sorted mods.I think cost wise it's worth it long term plus thepeace of mind at high speed.
The back end i got was off a 100k 325i with very little play in any of the bits ,i could proberbly use it as is, but will rebush the trailing arms.cost me £100 for the lot as i took it off myself from a private seller brakinghis own car.
The exhaust is the thing that will need most though by myself as every thing else is delt with by Monarch so i might well need a look at yours again for pointers.plus its an excuss to take a road trip.
Make sure you take plenty of photo's before & after, would like to know what you really get for your money! Also will be interesting how you get on with the new owner of Monarch.
Regarding insurance, yes you will have to advise them but I believe you have to sign a disclaimer before buying the conversion from Monarch..... so if it does fall in two down the motorway you have no legal come back on Monarch....but I am sure it will be okay
So thats the only part that is modified by Monarch?
From memory they supply:
New propshaft?
New handbrake cables?
New rear springs?
You have to buy new rear dampers (not stag ones though I believe)?
Rear brake pipe?
Sort exhaust out. Never though of this before, I imagined no mods but thinking about it the original exhaust is supported by the original crossmember!
What are doing about the front hubs? Are your wheels designed tobolt to the original PCD front hubs and then different PCD for the back...could be a spare wheel issue?...or if you have the new front hubs (more expence!) they can all be the same bolt PCD. I quess you can then have a BMW spare wheel, maybe a spacesaver!
Mike
Got 2 goodspares from the donor car
All the same PCD going onnew alloy hubs with larger bearings also the 4 pot alloy calipers.like you say more expense but there's no point having rear disc brakes and 225/50 tyres then leaving the original front brakes.I'll have to balance the brakes with a proportioning valve when it's all done.not sure weather i will change the brake servo for the bmw one.i might try the stag one first.
The other part to be modified is the diff mounting plate (I got a good one of of ebay so i don't have my car out of commision whilst the mods are being done).
All i have to do now is wait for my "stag fund" to rise to the occasion:shock:,hope to be bolting it all on next year.
Stagdad hope your uprating the suspension as well especially the front, otherwise you'll be scraping the front valance on the road with those 4 pot calipers!
Rear disc's IMHO will make little difference as over 60% of the braking is done by the front so it will be more of a cosmetic thing than performance.
Cosmetic that is until the brake dust starts eating away at those gorgeous alloys you've bought:shock::?.
Its a shame the only conversion possible is from a BMW after all the damage they did to the Rover (Triumph,MG,Riley,Austin etc) Group!:X
Can't wait to see what the results are when you've finished, will it be done in time for the National day 2008 as this is not far from me and would love to have a look at what you have done.
The exhaust is the thing that will need most though by myself as every thing else is delt with by Monarch so i might well need a look at yours again for pointers.plus its an excuss to take a road trip.
Steve
Hi Steve,
Major modifications were needed to house the exhaust system on the car, this included a complete reshape of the boot floor allowing the housing of the two silencers. The petrol tank had to be moved up into the boot area and was also put on the passenger side of the vehicle in order to improve weight distribution. I would imagine that you would not want to do these modifications to your boot floor, so a straight through exhaust system may be a better option.
Regards,
Jon
