Horrible whirring noise from nearside front wheel area

    Hello Staggers,

My car has developed a horrible whirring noise from the front nearside wheel area, that is consistent with road speed.

I have adjusted the wheel bearing ,and there is now noplay evident,in fact I think this has increased the noise a little.Does it follow that if the bearing is correctly adjusted it should be silent or can it be adjusted up an still noisy?

In another bid to sort this myself and reading other posts,I swapped tyres to try illiminate the possibility of miss shapeness of tyre, still noisy.

Assuming that the noise is the wheel bearing can some one give me a a quick how to do ,if not the bearing whats else could I check.?

Any guidence on best way to proceed with this noise would be greatly apprecaited.

The bearing should not make any noise regardless of adjustment.

Make sure the splash guard is not rubbing on the brake disk.

Also make sure you dont have a hedghog jammed in your brakes

No hedgehogs go quiet and squishy...........

On a serious note. yes, wheel bearings will go noisy when they have failed. The bearings will be damaged and misshapen, so will make a noise. Not a difficult job to replace the front bearings. Should take you about an hour per side.

Thanks Dave,I know there are no hedgehogs or other obstructions.

Is it just a case of prizing out the old bearings with blunt screwdriver or simular, any hazards to be aware of?

          Many Thanks MARK

            Hi Mark,

Do you have a copy of the ROM, or even Haynes? The method is in there.

Usual safety precautions when working on a car with a wheel off. Also be careful when you remove the caliper. Hang it off properly and don't let any weight bear on the brake hose. You will need a drift to knock the old ball-race out of the hub, but you should not need any special tools.

I don't have a full edition of Adobe here to post the relevant pages together, so have posted them as separate images.

Hi Mark, spanners, blunt screwdriver or blunt cold chisel, and medium to small hammer. With the hub off, turn it over and place face down on a CLEAN surface, first clean out as much of the old grease as you can get to, if you look closely, you'll see two semi-circular cut outs opposite each other, these arethe access points for your drift, tap out the outer bearing raceusing firm blows alternating from side to side to keep things as square as poss, then turn it over and repeat with the inner, this will take the oil seal with it. When you fit the new ones, use the old races as drifts to drive them in, do it fairly gently, keeping it as square as you can, then replace the new seal and fill everything within sight with great gobs of grease, easier to do than to read. Martin.

Many thanks to all, think I can just about tackle this one.I have taken a caliper off before an remember it was a pig to re align to get bolt through, any tips?

Only problem is I dont have a drift,is this a triangular/wedge shaped piece of flat steel?.

Can anything else be used as an alternative?.

Again many thanks the trouble taken is really appreciated.

                  Mark

a sturdy old flat-blade screwdriver should do the job

                        Hi Martin,

I know I keep saying thanks and you think Iam too nice, but just to let you know I have just finished fitting my front wheel bearing and apart from a little stuggle driving in 1 of the bearing tracks all went very well and I enjoyed solving this problem.

I followed your instructions inplicitly and all went to plan, due to good guidence.

Thanks to you and aother posters for your help, moaning for the passenger side has now been illiminated !

That's brilliant Mark, nicely done sir, it's hugely satisfying. Now do the other side, best done in pairs. Martin.
