    Brake disc surprise

I've just spent the morning fitting new brake discs and Greenstuff pads. The old discs looked good from the outside, but when I put braided hoses on recently I noticed that they werte not looking too healthy on the inside. When I got them off they were much worse that I thought, only the centre three quarters of the pad was doing anything on one:shock:

The brakes worked well, hopefully they will be even better now

    Hi Brian,

I've seen worse:shock: I suspect it was caused by old "hard pads" and lack of use. when the car is not used a thin layer of rust builds up, then when you do use the car the rust justs gets polished up and not cleaned right off and forms a tough skin. This cyclecarries on until they get to this state. Its a big problem on lightly used cars with rear disk brakes. Its also another argument to use the car regularly

You used to service them when they were current didn't you Martin?

            Roger,
I wondered must have caused it, thanks for the explanation. From 1988 until 2008 when I bought it, the car only covered 1,000 miles per year, so this explains it. It must have had a shock as it now covers 1,000 miles per month more often than not!! The pads I took out were Apec - not heard of them before.

            Stag 46,
The discs which I took off today have covered 118,000 miles, amazingly they gave no clue that anything was wrong!

              Hi Brian,

The discs on my land rover 110 were in a similar state after about 70,000 miles. I suspect the pads were the original type that still incorporated asbestos - they stilll had plenty of wear in them and were still quite effective - just looked horrible and made grinding noises:shock:. In the "modern" post asbestos world pads seem to last about 30k miles and you seem to need new discs every other set of pads because they wear out much more quickly due to the different material on the pads. This does have the positive benefit of helping to stop the disks getting into a glazed rusty state. But as i said in my earlier post some modern cars with rear discs suffer from the problem because the rear brakes don't work hard enough to keep the discs clean - I think this mainly applies to the first generation of cars with rear discs.

Nice to hear its doing a regular decent mileage,if you can its best to keep using them.
