    Starter cable

    Hi all,

I have a problem with starting my Stag which hopefully someone can help me with.

The ignition comes on OK - all lightson - but the starter motor does not work. It worked perfectly OK when I put the carinto the garage but next time I tried to start her - nothing.

I've checked the white & red cable at the ignition switch and it has 12V when the key is turned to the start position but atthe white& red cable on the starterI get nothing.

There is a connector block on the steering column above the pedals and the supply is OK up to there. The white & red cable then disappears into the wiring loom and does not seem to show itself until the starter motor.
The wiring diagram does not show any other connections up to the starter motor (manual gearbox, so no inhibitor switch) so I'm a bit at a loss where to check next - short of undoing the loom.

Anyone know what route the white & red cable takes and are there any other connection points I can check.

I have a Sigma security system fitted but this normally stops the ignition coming on rather than stopping the starter.

Although I've not posted any problems before, the Forum has been a great source of information on other problems I've had. Hopefully, it can come to the rescuethis time.

    Thanks

    Phil

    Hi Phil,

I had a similar problem. What state is the red and white wire and connector in at the starter motor end. I ended up chopping about 4" off of mine and replacing it as a) the insulation had gone really hard due to heat from the exhaust manifold and b) the wire had badly corroded where it entered the spade connector. Once I had done this it was all OK again for several hours before the inhibit switch started to play up

As a side noteI ended up doing the same thing to the wires on the other side of the engine going to the oil pressure switch and ballast resistor for the same reasons - infact the ignition live feed had bare wires where the insulation had cracked and fallen off - again I suspect due to prolonged heat from the back of the engine and mainifold. Worth checking the state of all the cables whilst you are about it.

      Roger,

The cable & connector seem OK. Following your response I've exposed the cable about 4in from the starter motor where it joins the general loom. The black covering is very brittle but the cable under is in good condition but isdead there too. Looks like I'll have to expose it further back until I find the problem.
