    Rear wheel bearings

    Hello Staggers,

Having sorted out my whinning front wheel bearing,I now see that one of the rear wheels has some play,I know that replacement of rears is much more complicated involving presses etc,but is there any adjustment at all to try to take up this play?

    Any Help is always welcome,

    Mark

Mark - there is adjustment on them, I believe the end float should be set between 2 - 4 thou with a dial guage upon assembly.

Issue is that to adjust them you need 2 huge but very slim spanners and have to hope that the lock tab is re-useable. If not, I believe you'll need to strip them again to fit a new tab!

May be wrong but see plan.... 138861 is the adjusting nut, 134585 is the Lock-nut and 139057 the lock tab.

Thank you Ian,was beginning to think this one had got em all stumped,I have also found abit about this on the other forum, particuarly regarding the collapsable sleeve/spacer.

Well I definately have got play on one side ,but I dont have the spanners ,definately not got a dial guage and dont know how to use one.

Its sort of dissappointing this because I have made so much progress ,with the help of the forum in fixing things and my Stag is now the most mechanically sound it has ever been in my 9 yrs of ownership.

So it sounds like a garage and hefty bill job.

Would still be interested in hearing from anyone this had a DIY solution for this.

        Regards Mark,with a wobbly end float !

            Hi Bud,
I also don't have a dial gauge or a huge press, so swerved round the problem by buying one off E Bay from Les Clark at Carnforth (a regular fleabay seller) for £15, after he assured me in a phone call that the bearing was good (which it was).
Fitted in half an hour and been no problem for two years.
            It's the easy solution.
            regards,
            Peter

              Thanks Peter,

Was the £15 for a second hand hub assembly or just a new rear bearing.?

I thought it was very difficult to remove/fit bearing with out a press etc.

Would you mind briefly explaining how you did this ,

Could you say what you mean by its the easy solution,do you mean fit a new bearing?

              Many Thanks ,

              Mark

                Hi Bud,
The £15 (plus around £7.00 carriage) was for the whole driveshaft assembly, right up to the diff.
I replaced the UJ's with GKN items off fleabay, as a matter of course, but find Les Clark a very honest dealer - no connection to me other than a supplier.
Interestingly, I could not find any play in the bearing when I took the old one off, which was the reason for an "advisory" at MOT time.
hope this helps - If you need Les's number, contact me or look at his items for sale on E Bay.
                Hope you get it sorted.
                Peter
