Any Stag owners still using underseal

Gents started removing old under-seal from the Stag yesterday but to be honest I have scraped away most from the rear of the car as the back running gear has been removed for refurb.

What I have found beneath the under-seal is pretty good with only a little surface rust where the under-seal has flaked and allowed moisture beneath. I am now thinking that the under-seal seems to have done well, the job that it was designed for, and am considering undercoating and re-applying under-seal. I don't really want to have the vehicle underside as pristine as the top. Also taking into considerationthe amount of salt that is on the roads here in the far North, I don't think that a painted underside would be practicable.

Any advise on this and what would be a good underseal, was thinking of using Tetroseal

Hi Mike, as you say, underseal breaks up after a while and traps water, the later wax based treatments are superior as they continue to self-heal for quite a long time. Personally I would avoid "Shutz". For the first time, I'm keeping mine off the salt this winter, snow and rain I don't mind, but getting salt on 35 year old steel really is taking the p###. Martin.

Mike, i have re undersealed my car with Hamerite underseal with added waxoil. It seems different to the old stuff and goes on quite well!

i will be doing the front this winter.

I find that Dinitrol underbody coating and Waxoyl underseal are both very good. They do not go brittle and flake off. The comment on Shutz is interesting as I was thinking of using that on mine as it is easy to spray on.

If you haven't already got a spray gun this is a pretty good deal.

Hi Mike, Shutz is a bitumen based product, while it is very resiliant, it also hardens without any sign, whether it lasts forlong or short periods, it will crack and let water underneath with no warning. The waxoyl based underseal that Jason mentioned, is very good, however, it does not resist wear as bitumen does and needs to be periodically re-done. That's a sad factof life, hard wearing but unpredictable, or flexible but not so long lived, at least when the Hammerite/Waxoyl stuff starts to wear you can see it, that's what I use, and will continue to.

Most of us spend some timedown below, and it only takes a glance to check, an aerosol in the garage effects a quick repair.

The best of all rust proofers is based on lanolin, not diesel/paraffin, but it's expensive, EJ Wards have it but I can't remember the name. Sorry for the ramble. Martin.

I used the same as Martin & Jason plus the stonechip pretection on the splash panels etc.
