Fuel Injected Stag - USA c2002

    Hi guys,

A few years ago, pre-2002, someone in the States modified a Stag by fitting fuel injection. It seems to have been a very well engineered package but I cannot find any record of it.

The essential part of this conversion – the inlet manifold - is probably based on a TR7. The inlet manifold has the typical ‘Lucas’orifices to mount the fuel injectors in, and these parts were just perfect for this project, the only alteration was the rear end of the manifolds which needed curved suction pipes instead of the straight ones. The upper end of the pipes are now pointing upwards, to take the baseplate of the next part, the plenum chamber. This part comes from a Corvette small block engine and is perfect for our Stags, which needs a flat design otherwise ugly power bulges have to be made in the bonnet. The front end points directly towards the fan and the radiator top, just as original.

A baseplate was specially made for the plenum chamber, because of the electronic ignition which is located at the rear (I think this is a modern no-distributor ignition system. PH), The original distributor, drive is needed for driving the oil pump via jackshaft. All the other parts shown fit almost perfect for this conversion and viewed from the top this system looks as if it was tailor made for the Stag.
I'll try to post some pictures below this post.

I have no details of how well this system worked or what became of it later. If anyone knows anything of this car, would they please contact me? If they could put me in contact with the owner that would be even better.

And I think you will find Russ Brown only used the Throttle body from the LT1, he manufactured his own plenum. His new EFI stag with 8 throttle bodies looks awesome.

Although a long time coming my own efi conversion is nearing completion using TR7 injection manifolds, home made plenum, megasquirt fuel and ignition managementand an XJ40 throttle body.

EFI has been a hot topic on the forumwith everyone appoaching the subject from different directions. Worth a search on 'EFI'.

I've found out who owned this car a little while ago. It was definitely a guy named Russ Brown. I have a few more pictures which I'll upload, if this one works.

        Let's hope there's a picture below!

From my own experience with efi on stag engines I can say that the inlet manifold is the critical piece if you want more power. The standard manifold is good for up to 165 to 175 bhp depending on exhaust system, cams compression etc.Fabricated manifolds with individual runners are far better for torque, but the length of the runners and the shape of the trumpets is critical in getting good power figures. Those of you who saw my TR5 at Uttoxeter this year will know it did 207 hp but a month earlier it only made 172 and the only difference was the shape and length of the trumpets.

Non of these figures are from enginuity. Last year 175hp on the rolling road at the TR international at Malvern dropped to 155hp at enginuity, a drop of about 12%. Those of you who ran your cars on the rolling road at Uttoxeter and got roughly the standard figure of 145hp could probably expect to see about 128 hp at enginuity using the same 12% reduction. I was third car on the rollers at Uttoxeter, the first two made 111hp and 114 hp.

Judging by the performance of my new aquisition it is nearer to 100hp than 200hp but I dare say time will change that:dude:

When I get a spare couple of hours I will try and post a table of results from my two stag efi engines with the various modifications done over the years.

Peter, they look "as if it was tailor made for the Stag" because they were. Russ fabricated the entire plenum. The only Corvette part is the throttle body.

I have PM'd you Russ's Email Address, it would be good if you could get an article on his 'new' efi stag engine.
