    Clutch fitting

    Hi All

I am about to purchase a new clutch assembly etc for installing withe MOD gearbox I recently obtained for the project car. I have never fitted a clutch before:?

So I am hoping the resident experts on here can give me some pointers on:-

    assembly techniques?

    which clutch type to buy?

long nose carriers, how to identify one?

    etc etc.

Plus, has anyone got an alighnment tool I could borrow?

    Regards

    Bruce

Paddocks kit was reccomended to me which was fitted by Faversham classics, it was photod and an article was done on the car at the time by triumph world mag, think it was about the august 08 edition. they found some triumph 2000 bits in mine, which were not compatible.

covered all the pitfalls, good luck.
ps i do have a tool for clutches you can borrow i will dig it out.

It is the paddocks 'modified' clutch kit that Favershams are going to put on mine too. Long gearbox noses are as rare as hens teeth.

SOC spares are in the process of getting some made but timescales seem to be a little hazy! I have been hoping to get one for mine but too late now, it is all back together again.

        Hi

I have just dug out that particular mag. An informative article. Thanks for the tip off and offer of the tool.

        Cheers

When people talk about long nose extensions in clutches, do they mean the item called the "sleeve" in the attached diagram?

          Cheers

            Hi Bruce

Yes, that is the part. They can also have a grove cut in them to hold more grease.
I was lucky in that I found mine already had one fitted when I removed the gearbox.:dude::dude:

You can make one from two normal ones cut and welded together.

            Your car is looking sweeeeet!!

              Are you sure Al?

I thought the gearbox nose extension was the bit that that sleeve slides along, not the sleeve itself. The standard nose means that the sleeve is half off when the clutch is depressed, the longer nose means that more of the sleeve has something to bear on therefore has a more likelihood of smooth travel.

You are correct Dave. They work very well with the sleeves that have an internal groove to fill with grease. The last time I did a MOD gearbox, I fitted this combination and it made a huge difference to the lightness and smoothness of the clutch.

It is also important to ensure that the 'dowell bolts' are fitted. There has been plenty of discussion about them on here before. A search should bring that up.

                      Hi Guys

Thanks for the clarification. I will pop into the grage this evening and take a look at my gearbox to see what type of nose extension it has fitted. Do I feel lucky?:?

With regards to the dowel fitment etc I had done a search in the archive before I put out my original post.

                      Cheers

                      Bruce

Unlucky as it turns out. Will purchase a long nose extension.

                              Hi All

I collected a long nose extension and matching recessed bearing carrier today from Martin of Justriumph.

Can anyone suggest which type of grease to place in the recess? How easy a job is it to replace the bearing?

                              Thanks

                              Bruce
