    Helicoil alternative

Anyone had any experience with these?
A fitter i work with uses Keenserts to repair threads in alloy. He says Helicoils are fine providing you don't want to remove the screw to many times, which can pull the thread out.
Keenserts are a virtually permanent repair that won't pull out,and much easier to use.
No special tools required other than drill, tap & hammer.
Basically you drill and tap the damaged hole.
    Screw in Keensert until flush.
Hammer down the pegs, which locks it in place.
They certainly look the part when fitted.

    Hi Steve

We use Keenserts at the factory where I work. We repair and overhaul components off trains. Keenserts arefar superior to Helicoils.

The only drawback apart from the price is that the insert is oflarger diameter than a helicoil. So beware of the minimum wall thickness requirements if you are drilling anywhere near the edge of the item into which you are fitting it.

    Cheers

Fortunately I have not had to use any sort of coil inserts (yet!) .

The way I look at it is that if you use the coil type insert first, you still have somewhere to go if it fails as you can use the solid insert. If you go straight for the the solid one and it gives up, you have nowhere left to go.

      Just my two pennies worth!

I have a head with all the inlet bolt holes and most of the exhaust bolt holes done with something similar. Cannot see any sign of pegs though and wondered if they had been "glued" in.

The pegs are not visible once they are knocked down to lock the insert in place.

There is a an element of logic about going for a helicoil first followed by a keensert. However, keenserts last much longer than a helicoil so there is an opposing view that it is better just to go straight for the keensert and eliminate the messing around.

We use them in an application on atrain final drive where an M16 insert withstands a torque of 840Nm with no problem.
