    Heated garage

I am having a standard double garage built so I can finally keep my Stag dry at home. It will not be attached to the house and it would be nice to have some form of low cost heating for the winter. It will have power.

Anyone any ideas on decent heaters. Someone once told me you could get strip heaters which would run the length of the garage under the car, but I cannot find any links to this.

    Comments welcome.

If you make sure it is very dry (damp course and no leaks!) why would you need heating (unless its for you!)?

I have a very dry garage and my cars never suffer any problems.

Hiya, from the car's point of view, you're infinately better off with a de-humidifier, a small amount of moisture is necessary and they allow for that, heating on it's own is not a good idea. Martin.

        Ok thanks,

FYI I presume the garage will be dry but live on a flood plain so can expect some damp in the air + own 2 cars built in the 1970's with zero rust protection from new, so am trying to be proactive

My garage is heated by the tumble dryer, you would not believe how much heat those things give off - don't ask me what a tumble dyer is fornor for that matter the dishwasher, cookeror washing machine.:P

I agree, my garage does get damp, I built a sort of reusable "carcoon" around the car (wooden frame, plastic sheeting) and aB&Q dehumid (£&%) for winter - it was great. The only downside was lack of access to the car.

For the last 10 years, I have had two electric convector heaters, set on low / frost setting and a fairly large dehumidifier set on a timer. A humidity gauge is fixed to the wall and I try to keep relative humidity at about 50%. (Too high and the air is too damp, too low and rubber seals and othe car items dry out too much!)

Dehumidifier not really needed during summer (warm, dry ambient air) or winter (cold, dry ambient air) but during autumn and spring there is lots of condensation on cars left outside and air can be misture-laden.

Would recommend de-humidifier, as during its operation, it warms the air slightly any way and as a by-product you gets gallons of de-ionised water! - Good for batteries, cooling systems, washer bottles, oh and steam irons!

The heaters may be turned up higher when your working in the garage!

                Hope this helps, regards, John

I have been looking for a product that i have seen in the past, but i dont seem to be able to find the details at the moment.

It was a large canister, with moisture absorbing material in it. It would absorb the moisture from the garage, when full it could be left over night in an oven to re-charge, this seems great as i can stick it in the aga. I thought it was about £150 and available from Carcoon suppliers, yet i dont seem to be able to find what i am looking for.

Has anyone else seen something similar, you can get water absorbing crystals, but once used they need to be disposed off. I am not sure what chemical they use but it doesn't sound that friendly to the environment (although a good 12mpg stag thrashing is more than acceptable!)

You can get bags of those crystals from Frost. I was going to order some the other day but they were out of stock. I can't remember the cost off the top of my head but I think it was under £20.

If you have mains power in the garage, the de-humidifier is the way to go!
