    A wheely simple question

I'm about to repaint my standard alloys. I see from a posting last year that Hammerite gloss was reccomended by some but my question is - is the standard wheel really Gloss or would Satin black be closer to the original?

Somehow, I think satin could look better.

I think satin would be closer to original. I saw a Stag many years ago at a technical retreat in Norfolk that had the wheels painted to match the body colour. Looked pretty cool but probably only works for dark colours.

      Thanks Westfaling

As I said, I like the idea of Satin finish. Ironically, I'll be changing from (almost) bodycolour to black. I've just bought mine in British Racing Green with the wheels painted a metallic green. Looks OK but I prefer original.

      Be seeing you.

Hi, I believe they should be gloss, but what the hay, have them as you want them ! If you do use Hammerite smooth, make sure you use the non-ferrous metal primer they do as well. Post us a pic when they're done. Martin.

            Hi Jleyton

I just bought a stag exactly like yours, same BRG colour same interior; not green wheels though!

              Hi Chris

And what colour coachlines are on yours? It seems most of the references say BRG should have gold but most of the ones I've seen are silver/aluminium.

Although gold would seem to go well with green, I prefer silver, especially with black wheels. Hence me painting my wheels black; buying silver coachlines and finally, reverting the T bar cover to black instead of beige (see prev pic)

Talking of which, has anyone got a good beige drivers seat backrest cover, passengers seatbase cover and headrest for sale? (Or should I be asking this in the 'wanted' section?)

Are you going to spray or hand paint them. Spoke recently to a classic car enthusiast up this way, and he had hand painted various trim on another make of car using a black enamel paint, which was self leveling, he insisted that the results were good.

Not so sure about this myself???!!!!

I've done this once and I sprayed them. Masking up is a bit fiddly a razor blade comes in handy and good quality masking tape. I sprayed them with clear lacquer to keep the corrosion at bay.
Th MGOC sell the same GKN Kent alloy wheel in a nice gun metal or anthracite colour that's quite attractive. I believe that the wheels are machined slightly differently but I don't know the details of this. does anyone?
I don't suppose anyones reading this in NZ but I'm looking for some used alloys to recondition. I'm converting from wires. Should'nt be too rare as they were fitted to Triumph 2500s as well.

I was planning on experimenting with the spare first.

They've been handpainted with metallic paint and look pretty good so I may be ok by hand. Still haven't decided wether to do them satin of gloss though !

Silver I think, butnot sure asI haven't picked up the car yet. It has a beige hood as well which must be bespoke I would think? Also the car has a Holley carb, but I will ditch this and fit one of my Weber kits instead.

I sold a complete set of beige interior a while back, and was surprised at the price it fetched. Now I realise that the price reflected the rarity as you cant get replacement material in the same colour. So good luck with your hunt for beige covers.

                        Hi Chris

I'm sure the standard hoods were only ever Black, but you know more about them than me these days ! I think I mentioned to you in a PM that I had the unenviable job of a service receptionist in a Triumph dealership in the early 70's however the memory's not what it was

Just a thought, if you decide to keep the beige hood, would you like my beige T bar cover which I am intending to replace with the original black one? (See my earlier pic in this thread - Dec 11th)

As for my beige covers, it's reallly odd as the centre section of the drivers backrest and the the passengers cushion are the correct colour and texture, but the outer parts of bath are a nasty shiny smooth finish - but still in beige. Guess I'll have to keep looking for the real thing !

                        Cheers

                          Hi again Julian

I think your seats will have been repaired if some panels are a different colour/texture. I will let you know if I get or see any more beige ones.

Re the T-bar I want to keep the car looking as original as possible, so I may even replace the hood with a black one.

                          Cheers

Gent's Alderidge Trimmers do the replacementcovers in beige colour. I recently ordered up new beige carpet set and also asked if they supply beige interior. They advised that they do everything although they would have to order the correct material in.
