    flywheel dowel removal

    Hi Guys

Has anyone got any good tips for how to remove the dowels from a flywheel?

    Cheers

I think they are just a press fit; at least mine were as two of the three were rattling around in the bell housing when I last removed the gear box. I would think they'd come out with mole grips but that'll probably destroy them :?

      Hi Nick

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. Will apply some penetrating oil before I attack them with the grips

Any suggestions on how to remove the brass bush from the end of the crank? Will it chisel out?

      Cheers

        HI Bruce

Warm the pin with a gas torch then just pull out with mole grips.

You need then to pack the spigot bearing/crank hole with grease - LM or Molyslip will do - try not to trap air in the hole.

Now place you close fitting tool just a little way into the spigot bearing - if there is little or no air, you should feel resistance - if not repack with grease to get rid of the air.
Now with a mallet/hammer give your close fitting tool a sharp tap, pushing it into the spigot bearing hole. With a bit of luck you should see the spigot bearing pop out a bit!
Repeat the steps above until the spigot bush is all the way out

Clean out all the grease! Do not get any on the flywheel!

Remove the bush from its oily pool, give it a quick wipe and offer up to the the end of the crank.
GENTLY tap in using a plastic drift (or soft mallet if you are very careful) make sure it goes fully passed the chamfer in the crankshaft. DO NOT use a metal hammer, as you will bur the bush!
            Job Done!

If you use a very tight fitting length of wooden dowel it will make life easier!

                  regards,

Drill down centre of dowel - fill hole with oil - using a piece of rod same diameter of drill, place in hole - hit rod with hammer - dowel will slide out
