    Holley Carb

I have a Holley with a problem, can anybody help?

I have been fitting a new radio so had the ingition on for a while without the engne running, noticed a petrol smell after a while and I could here the petrol pump clicking every 30 or 40 seconds. Whipped the air cleaner off to see petrol dripping/running off the two jets? at the top of the carb nearest the windscreeen. This explains the strong petrol smell I have been noticing for a while when the engine is switched off.

Sounds like a float chamber problem to me, but I might be completely wrong - any ideas on what to do anybody - I don't have any information on the carb at all.

Dirt under the needle valve i would say or float level settoo high.

When hot after a run mine drips fuel from the throttle pump nozzles for a while what about anyone else.Iv'e had 2 holleys and they both did this.

    Cheers Steve

If fuel is dripping into the venturis the carb is flooding. Cause could be faulty needle valve, fuel level set too high, or fuel pressure too high. Easiest thing is to try adjusting the fuel level to lower it and see if that stop the dripping.

Best way to see if its a needle valve problem is to remove the little brass level screw in the side of the float chamber. If done when the engine is cold and some fuel has evaporated, the fuel should only rise to the bottom of the hole when the ignition is turned on. If it overflows the fuel level could just be set too high so slacken off the jet height lock nut and give it a bit of a turn and lock back up. If fuel still keeps coming out it is probably dirt in the needle valve. I had this problem regularly with a pre filtered Facet pump and found the pump was shedding tiny bits of rubber from its non return valve. Another pre carb filter cured it.

Thanks a lot for the advice - I've adjusted the float height & it now seems to be ok, it might have been dirt because the previous owner had not fitted a fuel filter at the carb end of the fuel pipe & i haven't got round to doing it yet.

            So thanks again
