    Who says Lancia's are unreliable

After Clarkson's comments about Lancia's the other day, I thought I'd share a Lancia story.

My old HF turbo, which hasn't turned a wheel in nearly a decade, had to be moved recently. I changed the oil, put a fresh battery in it, fuel in the tank, air in the tyres and turned the key.

ThenI drove it out of the workshop. I couldn't believe it. I expected the brakes to be stuck at the very least.

This car has a real family history. My great uncle bought it new, trading in an NSU RO80 for it, and I remember my grandad taking me for a ride when I was about 10 or 11 and going on about a turbo. I didn't have a clue what he was on about but he seemed pretty excited. When I was 19 my great uncle died and my mum, who drove a Lancia Beta Spyder in her youth, bought the car from the estate. She used it for a few years and then gave it to me. I promptly stuffed it into a ditch on a wet night, which I was lucky to walk away from. I repaired it within a week, and carried on using it for a while, until I laid it upbefore I went travelling for a couple of years. When I came back I realisedthe subframe was rotted and it needed major surgery to MOT it, so I decided to use something more solid for a daily driver-a '79 BMW 320. Another great car.

Had quite a few Alfas, Lancia's and Fiats over the years.

Most fun Lancia was a '87 Y10 Turbo, 1049cc intercooled turbo, a true super mini before its time.

Most fun Alfa a '91 33 Permament 4, a gorgous quad cam 1.7 boxer engine and permament four wheel drive.

Most fun Fiat a '88 Panda. Used it like a skip when I bought my first house, bought for £300 at auction, sold privately 2 years later for £400 and I never spent a penny on it apart from tax, insurance and petrol...and maybe an oil change or 2!

A long time ago, I had a Lancia Fulvia Coupe, series 2, 1.3 litre and 95 bhp, getting in was like putting on your favourite jacket, and driving it ? you could keep up immence speeds on back and country roads because slowing for bends and roundabouts was not required.

Lancia built it to beat the Mini on the Monte Carlo and succeded in spades. Once on the M4 at about 90, I heard a ticking noise from the n/s rear, pulled over to investigate and found that the tyre was dead flat, the ticking was the valve hitting the road, no instability at all. What the HF Lusso 1.6 was like I can't imagine. Lancia built the best drivers cars of all time, but never bothered to stop them returning to the red dust from whence they came, a great shame. Martin.

A lot of Italian stuff was the same at the time. In a garage between school and college, I pushed an Alfusud onto the lift for a new clutch - and put my hand through the wing:shock:. On the ramp, pushed against the bottom of wing and it gave way. When the owner picked it up he commented that he'd been quoted £300 for new wings and a respray - and the car was only 2yrs old.

Still think Alfa's make some of the most interesting cars

One of the biggest mistakes I made in my life was selling the White Lancia Fulvia 1.3 back in 1982. I backed onto a bollard and caused about£ 400.00 worthof damage. Sold it for a song, remember the infamous Poll tax, well I ended up owing a lot and people were going to prison for not paying up.

Really fast and pretty looking motors.Similar to the one in the pic.

Hiya, yes, similar, but that's a Mk 1, the headlights are level, they were too low for UK regs so the Mk2 & 3 had the outers raised. Martin.
