To those with a bit of time on your hands like me, a bit of trivia, but more importantly, a bit of education-hopefully.
After being offered and accepting a speed awareness course instead of 3 points (reasons withheld) it surprised and shocked me as to how ignorant/uneducated the other people attending were, and myself come to that.
After retiring from almost 30 years in the Fire Service and driving fire engines a lot of that time (yes, exceeding the speed limit legally) and passing an EFAD (Emergency Fire Appliance Driving) course, which is more or less to the standard of an advanced driving course, I got to see a lot of idiots on the road, especially when I had to cut people out of crashed vehicles, trouble was, they were normally the innocent ones.
At the course, there were questions throughout and I found the results alarming. There were people sitting in that class, all qualified drivers, in as much as they have passed a driving test which makes them competent to drive a vehicle on our highways, how long ago they passed I do not know.
I thought it might be interesting to put a few of those questions to you, as I have also asked friends and family, believe it or not, their answers weren’t far off the people on the course.
Answer them honestly and see how you get on before checking the answers. Don’t move on until you have answered the question.
All questions relate to the UK for the benefit of our Stag members abroad, if you have got this far, bless you, you must have as much time on your hands as I do, should be in the garage working on my car, but too damn cold.
Ready, time starts now-
Only joking, no time limit, take your time and think carefully. (Like who wants to be a millionaire, you probably either know it or you don’t).
1./ Road signs, what does a white circle with a diagonal black line through it stand for?
2./ What is the national speed limit in this country? (Bit of a clue to question 1).But you should have answered that before you read this.
3./ What is the maximum speed limit in this country?
4./ What is the speed limit on a dual carriageway.
5./ What does ABS do?
6./ How many people take lessons on how to drive an automatic properly? It’s surprising to know, not many people do as they assume they know and there is nothing to it. One person on the course stated his BMW does over 30mph in drive with no throttle and asked how without constant braking he could keep to the speed limit – he honestly didn’t know, do you?
Answers on a post card..................
It was interesting to find, but also not enough time on the course for a debate as everybody wanted to get home and understandably so, that an actual incident was the main theme for the subject of speeding.
A child had been hit by a car travelling at 40 mph in a 30 mph zone. Tests show (and tv adverts enforce this) that a human struck at 30mph is more likely to survive a crash, than at 40mph. Now you can say that is obvious and that well 20 is better that 30 and so on.
WITHOUT PREJUDICE and this is only my opinion.
The driver of the car was proven (by the skid marks, the car tyres, not the others) that he was travelling at 40mph when he struck the child, he was subsequently found guilty and if I remember right, he was banned from driving. My point here is that had we the time to debate, had the child not run into the road in front of the car, he would not have been hit and the driver and child would not have suffered the consequences, yet the child was not prosecuted for running into the road and causing the accident. Had the driver mounted the pavement and struck the child, then fair enough and as far as I can see the only crime the driver committed was speeding.
Right, what’s on Sky?
