    Towing Bracket

Did Stags come with a front towing bracket as standard? I ask because I haven't got one which would be a problem in the event of needing recovery as it's auto and would need to be loaded on a flat-bed.

No. Haynes says "Attach the tow rope by passing it through the aperture at the back of the bumper bracket." Mind you there is enough heavy metal back there to fit a tow hook if you thought you were going to need one regularly.

      Bill,

Autos are often seen with their rear wheels in the 'specs' type of frame and the front wheels on the ground, the car facing backwards for recovery. ie they don't need to be on a flat bed.

        Ray,

Interesting point....with or without steering lock engaged? Presumably unless the front wheels are perfectly centred it could cause problems?

I had a Rover 2000 towed on its front wheels years ago. No steering lock or perhaps the tow guy didn't trust it. I wasn't very happy when he wound down the windows of my pride and joy, put a plank of wood rightthrough the car, resting on my beautiful polished wood door cappingsand lashed the steering wheel to it. When I objected he offered to leave the car where it was, and me with it.

When I was unfortunate enought to use the recovery service on my insurance they sent out a flatbed because I had a stag. The guy who turned up said they always did for a stag, don't know why. He was an old fella and said that I should always insist on it, especially as I had an automatic. They use McAllisters for all recovery jobs.

I bought a second handtowing dolly a couple of years ago and spent ages asking every breakdown lorry driver and A.A. driver this same question. The A.A. said there was no mention of it in his book. But the general opinion from the breakdown truck operators was that you should take the steering lock off and tie the steering wheel in a straight position and fix it to the bottom of the seat frame. I wondered if it would self centre when towed or if it would crab. In the end when I do tow an autofor any reason I lift the front wheels and take the 4 bolts out of the prop/diff and tie the prop up.
