    Holley faults/issues

I have a car withthe HRS Holley fitted.

The idle speed was way too high and could not be lowered even after checking the shutting off of the primary and secondary valves. I found that the carb was getting too much air from a large vacuum intake (on theRH side)which was connected to the cam cover breather.

I have now blocked off this intake and connected the engine breather to theair cleaner. This now idles and runs fine.

Which breather connectiondo you use on yourHolley setup?

The other problem is bonnet clearance. I have checked the carb base and air cleaner and both seem to be properly seated, but the carb sits too high and hits the bonnet pad/bar. The bar is tight upagainst the bonnet padso thats not the cause.

    Is this normal?

Chris ,you may remember the PCV saga i had which was plumbed in through the large vacuum port you mentioned ,in my opinion that port is not needed on the stag engine and nor is a PCV valve ,just breath from camcover to air box.As for bonnet clearance ,no issues with mine ,have you got the 7deg plate?

I think i'm right in saying that if you have the flat adaptor plate and not the angled one you will have to use a small fillter and not the 14 lowrider.

    Cheers Steve

Hi Steve. You must have the adapter with the 7 degree wedge (Monarch or the guy in Canada).

I have the standard HRS kit whichcomes with an Edelbrock air cleaner (the triangular one) and a flat adapter so it leans back at 7 degrees. Surely the one he sells should not hit the bonnet?

My Holley kit was from HRS and yes I could not get the triangular air cleaner to clear the bonnet with the angle of my engine and the no built in wedge plate.

I therefore sent the air cleaner back for a credit, bought a wedge plate which leveled the Holley nicely, then fitted a dropbase 14 inch K&N which gave plenty of clearance.

I must have my engine high in the mounts or something but no way would the triangular air clear clear the bonnet without the wedge plate modification.

I also have an HRS Holley kit, the instructions that came with it said to remove the bar across the pad and I think it suggested I remove the pad or cut a hole in it for the filter to clear if needed. No problem with the filter.

My carb has the breather from the cam cover to the air filter and the large vacuum pipe on the base plate of the carb is blocked off.

hi, i have hrs holley fitted ,you have to move the bar about two inches towards the leading edge of bonnetusing the 14 inch air pan !!! cheers graham

I have the Tony Fox (Canadian) 7 degree adaptor and 14" aircleaner which fits perfectly without any clearance problems. It also levels the carb. Are there disadvantages to the 7 degree adaptor? Surely the esteemed Mr Hart would have included the tilt into the design if it was the better design?

John, as far as I can make out, there is no adavantage to having an adapter without the 7 degree correction, only disadvantages (non-level float chambers, air cleaner fouling of the bonnet).

I think the reason is that the HRS is not a cast component, it is machined from billet. This makes it difficult (more expensive) to manufacture.

I know this because onmy Weber 38DGMSadapter, I went to great lengths toget the 7 degree correction built in, even going for a casting it was still tricky, but worth it in my opinion.I can fit most dropped base 14-inch air cleanersand still have clearance without modifying the bonnet bar/pad. I have not tried the Edelbrock triangular filter yet, and although thid is not a dropped base design it still might fit; I have one at home waiting to try it out on my new car.

this is only my preference ,but as the engine slants backwards i think its only fitting that the carb slants backwards aswell !!! i know all will not agree but just my opinioncheers graham

                    The Strombergs didn't slope backwards!!

But I guess if you are happy with yours thats fine. Its only that mine squashes the air filter that I dont like.

i agree vmad , i would not like that either !! there seems to be a vast variety of different 14 inch air pans ,i think its a matter of getting the exact one for the stag application !!cheers graham

i have used hrs adapter and fabricated a 7 degrre wedge from a 2" pnenolic spacer

if you use the one with the four holes rather than the open unit.it will also improve lower torque and helps with stopping fuel boil/evaporation in the summer as its an insultor as well

easy made with a good belt sander

What do you do about the 4nuts or bolt heads that will be rideing on 1 edge of the fixing flange ?

BTWi sawthat sort of insulatingwedge hanging on the wall at Real Steel last time i was there.
